Yeah exactly. On a typical rainy or cloudy December/January day it’ll be just barely be light at 8:30-9:00 in the morning. Honestly I’d rather do that than it being dark at 4pm that time of year IMO.

It's interesting that way have unknowingly changed our clocks for the last time. My dad remembers when they got rid of it in the 70s, he said so many people got ran over walking to school.

Most medical professionals seem to think staying on standard time is the way to go.

It's definitely a drawback, and makes sense with you working east coast hours, but 5pm sunset in the winter would be nice, plus I would hate to have sunset at 8:15pm and sun rise at 4am, with it getting light out at 2:30-3:30am

Year-round DST first began in 1918, it was repealed a year later. So what did we do, we tried it again in 1974 with a 74% approval rating because hey, who doesn't want "more daylight!". Once again it didn't last long though with the approval rating quickly falling to 42% by January. People regretted not having daylight in the mornings to wake to and school children were getting hit by motorists. So once again it was repealed. With not many other important issues going on in the Senate right now, I say lets try it again. I mean what could go wrong??

Here in Montana we would have a sunrise of after 8:30am from mid November through mid February peaking in early January with a sunrise of 9:04am. Sounds joyful.

I've stated before that to me the time changes were never a big deal, but social media changed that. People looking for something to complain about when it's really trivial. What else is new. No one really cared before, and they didn't claim it was detrimental to their health or other nonsense like now. I welcome both time changes for what they represent. Spring ahead and renewed warmth, more daylight, and growth. Fall and Winter with longer nights and hopefully Cold and SNOW! Why change anything.

I'm sure people will change their minds about not having th time change in the fall when little Suzy and Timmy get ran over while walking to school. Or people cam learn to deal with it like extreme places in the world that have no sun for 3 months straight.

Literally none of this has happened. It wasn't an issue until this generation, like everything else. If people are so concerned with safety start a movement to remove all 'smart' phones from vehicles as they are the #1 reason for accidents and deaths distracted driving.

The airlines lobbied to have it take effect in when we would fall back in Nov 2023. Same reason we didn't go to Standard time right by Thanksgiving when we switched to first week of Nov.

If the change to permanent Daylight Savings Time happens, it won't apply until 2023.  So regardless we will still "Fall Back" in early November.   Issue is scheduling for transportation like airlines, for example.  They need more time to make adjustments.

completely disagree on social media changed it...made it more widely recognizable conversation piece, certainly.  

my age shows but before the internet it was a hot button topic with parents complaining of the morning darkness and i can very well remember the grumblings in the dorm because people were pissy or hung over for about a week.

GFS caves to the Euro for the umpteenth time. We could have only the Euro/EPS and no other global guidance and we’d just fine. Superior model physics all around.

The GFS is complete and utter garbage. Literally has lower z500 skills scores than the Euro had a **decade ago**.

At this point I’d lease/sell the rights to the GFS to IBM or something, and streamline gov’t resources on shorter range products like the NAM/HRRR, perhaps a blend that runs every hour. Let the private sector work on the GFS. Because I have no use for it these days.

And probably wrong. Some of this is anecdotal, but I’ve noticed since the upgrade last spring it’s been consistently overzealous with the Aleutian low in the medium to extended range (whether that culminates in zonal flow and/or a +PNA type pattern).

There are still dark mornings even after falling back on the clocks, waiting for the school bus especially when its raining. 

I can recall many days there wasn't actual light until class has already started. Some forget how dark the weeks before and after Winter Break really are.

In regards to risk of students being hit, this also happens after school hours. I had to stay extra often to get some last minute work done, it got dark quick on standard in the early evening. 

There will always be mixed opinions on the subject, but overall I'm going for year round DST. For the students that need some extra credit after school hours, it'll stay light longer.
