Are you in the west hills?

250 ft, far west metro. Several miles west of HIO. Areas closer to the coast range are faring pretty well with this event so far even without great elevation.

Places are gradually changing over from west to east though.

You can see it is sticking nicely all the way down to low elevations up against the eastern slopes of the coast range.

The 0z GFS is a bit more continental this week than previous runs.  Somewhat higher max temps but colder mins.  Still some fine tuning to be done for what will be a cold week.

Looking at the current 500mb maps it's pretty plain to see this would be a major cold event in the winter.  I doubt that April 2008 ever had this look at the 500mb level.  2011 may have.

April 2022 is a month we will be talking about for a long time.

Especially in Portland, but even places that don't see a lot of snow are going to have notable cold for a sustained period.

Tomorrow will be a brisk N wind / crisp kind of day for the Seattle area.

You might get a good dose of snow there.  Harder call than places SE of you.

this would have been incredible in January or February... It's what many of the long-range models were showing last Fall... just came through a little late...

We got nailed in December / early Jan though.  I think the next 12 months are going to be talked about a for a long time.  With the flop of the potential El Nino we should be good to go for some serious cold shots at times this year and into next year.

The main precip shield is just south of Olympia now…only about 15-20 miles south of here. We will see not counting on it but some wrap around moisture is possible. 37 now DP 33 so pretty close to cold enough.

I know it's been all about the surface details lately, and rightfully so, but dang... This is a pretty nice looking 500mb pattern.

Really happy this appears to be working out for PDX folks.

I feel like the next couple years are going to produce some December 1972 level monster cold wave across the West. Maybe even better... January 1937 / 1949 moonshot?

Lots of extremely amplified / anomalous patterns over the last couple years, in both cold and heat. I'm not just talking about the PNW here either. Eventually it's going to line up just right in midwinter. Think mid-1930s.

Check out the 00z Canadian. More lowland snow opportunities later this week, verbatim.

Then a strong low with a tight pressure gradient plows into Vancouver island.

Yup.  We are in a very good mode right now.

Pretty insane we had a high temp of 24 here in December…coldest day in 30 years and then hit 106 the hottest day ever 6 months earlier all in the same year. Lytton BC hit 120 and a high temp of -5 (I think) in the same year nuts stuff!

Deform band incoming.

Euro nailed the position of it to within 50 miles, several days in advance. Kudos to the people who programmed that model. Top notch.
