Ah dang you felt that? Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a quake in that area before? Nothing on the regional information to indicate there has ever been. I wonder what fault this occurred on, or perhaps an unknown one.

Yeah that’s not an area I am aware of an active fault. Most in this area are on the Scott’s Mills/molalla fault. I would say this lasted 1-2 seconds.

A temporary break from the smoke and haze this morning.   Light east wind has pushed out all the gunk (fog and smoke) and the air looks clean and the mountains look clear.     I am sure it won't last long and NW flow will push it all back in here this afternoon... but it is nice to be able see off in the distance for a little while.

Looks like the low clouds and fog are confined to western Oregon from Portland southward.     Most of western WA is free of low clouds... even around the Sound.     There probably won't be much change through the weekend.

Today is a rough one at work. I've been given a special assignment, one that I didn't volunteer for, and it's not gone the way I had hoped it would on the outset.

I'm remedial training a coworker who has been here almost as long as me, and while the main part of the job seems to be going well with improvement...they've managed to no-call no-show twice in the last week, last night included. We had to order a welfare check to find her asleep last night. She came in and I pulled her off the floor for a meeting and it was a session full of waterworks and fears on her part.

She's likely getting fired after this, I can't see my place of employment letting 2 of these slide when you're on "ship up or ship out" training.

I just don't understand why someone who is a single mother with 4 kids, who went through the almost year-long hiring process, and who made it through all of the drama and craziness of the last 2 years, only to get themselves unceremoniously fired just prior to getting their pension vested.

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place, I just needed to vent as I sit here on OT wondering why someone with so much relying on them would flush away their career.

I see people do things like that all the time. Makes no sense logically, but I just think so many people are in such a bad headspace they just do not care. At least not in the moment, she will probably regret it later and have a boatload of excuses as to how they got "screwed."

Another foggy morning in Corvallis. NWS going with 76 for a high. Probably going to be wrong again. You’d think after the last few days of underperformance they’d adjust their forecast.

I think they were going with 83 in Salem, still pretty dense fog right now.

It's just unreal. The hiring process for here is very intense, but the rewards are a job with so much career security that they can't lay you off by law. Incredible benefits and a six figure income if you want it. Plus pension. And a bunch of vacation time. Hell I have 270 hours of sick time in my bank right now and I'm not even stingy.

To throw all that away over...I don't even know what. Insanity. And it feels like the last 2 weeks of me trying to fix her issues on the floor and all that stress was a complete waste.

Yeah that really sucks, clearly she has some bad stuff going on in their life.....I'm assuming you guys have an EAP and she has been referred to it?  My wife spun out at one of her jobs and her manager pulled her in, talked to her and gave a mandatory referral to EAP.  Turned out my wife had a hard time saying "no" when given a task and she was already overwhelmed.  She got coaching on handling that situation, and things got better.  There were a few humorous times when said manager would try to dump a bunch of stuff on her plate, my wife would politely say "no."  The manager would start to get cheesed then stop herself before smiling...  They would then sit down together and prioritize/plan how to get through all the projects and keep it from getting overwhelming.

That's the positive side of helping out a struggling employee, but unfortunately, those are usually the exception.  Usually people spiral out of control and can't/won't help themselves.

Oh yeah, we've given her every resource under the sun. We even have many resources that are exclusive to my profession, that are free and confidential. She's refused all of them and has been hiding behind the excuse of "I just haven't been getting enough sleep". Well it's been a year of not enough sleep, that's obviously not the problem.

I cannot think of one time in 11 years of management where I poured a ton of energy into someone who was failing and they actually appreciated it. 99% of the time people fail because they don't try and are not motivated. If you want to succeed, you will, and you cannot force anyone into success. If someone is not willing to put in the required work, and they are not willing to be an adult, there is not much you can do. I get it though, I always try to "save" these people and end up feeling burned because they just sucked my soul out for a month. Think of it this way, if you care more about the person having the job than they do, it is time to let them go.

That kind of issue they’re experiencing feels like some sort of mental illness onset or presenting itself. I sometimes have thoughts like that. Being too exhausted to complete any task that requires some form of responsibility. Then again, I could also feel seizures causing me to feel like I’m falling away from reality so who knows? I’m disabled now and couldn’t do those types of tasks anymore. I need something super repetitive.

I get that. Just sucks. This isn't really the kind of job that one can flounder like that. I mean, she was putting people's lives at risk. Real problem to have. Does feel like my soul has been thoroughly sucked out of me though.

I agree: the behaviour being described is just so illogical and personally counterproductive that it really makes me suspect mental illness is involved.

Foggy with a low of 52 this morning. Didn’t hit 80 yesterday, hopefully we can avoid it again today. I guess one silver lining of this pattern is that it’s kind of interesting to watch the inversion season dynamics slowly set in, all other things being equal with a ridge sitting over us for weeks during rapidly lowering sun angles.

Long Covid by chance?  You've had few in our company that have had to go on disability over it
