October 2016 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

Moderate winds and quick hitting rain showers here in Victoria now. Feels more like a storm, but not as strong as I would have expected given the track.

Nowhere near peak time for you yet.

sometimes these wild events are followed by a nice cold snap

i'd like to see that happen

then repeat again in november, december and January

You are correct.  Very stormy periods like this are usually a good sign.

This looks to be a total non-event for most of western Wa except for the far north. As I shared earlier today the low pressure is heading into mid to northern Vancouver island (see image below) and weaker. Winds have may have peaked down here with 24mph gust... Absolutely pathetic! Another typical PNW outcome.

I really wanted all my leaves to end up in the neighbors yard. This is a total bust. Gonna have to rake those suckers later this month.

2016-17 is already an epic failure. Looking forward to spring!!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

If local news wanted to have some credibility they should come out and say this is a non-event for most of the area. The storm tracked well west of what was shown earlier in the week. But some strong runs set in motion the hype machine and they want people to keep watching in fear. And yet when they go to the weather people they can see the storm heading into Vancouver Island and the wind speed maps look pathetic and they just ignore it and go back out to dramatic reporters in the field and go on with the hype.

Even NWS Seattle and Sno Co PUD hyping it still!

My wife made it on her flight.   She said there were very few cars on the road all the way there and that the airport was completely dead.   She said it felt strange.

Still have not had even a breeze here... absolutely calm.

Biggest bust since that 1950 redux that was supposed to happen several years ago.

Drove up to Redmond a few hours ago, hardly anyone even on the road, it was nice. Feels like everyone is preparing for the apocalypse or something.

Some of the best commutes I've had in western wa was when a mass storm was supposed to strike...

Same can't be said for snowstorms, seems like everyone and their mother gets in their cars during those events!

No traffic anywhere... there are always slow spots even on the weekend.   Usually lots of them.

Alot of the people who get scared remember some of our bad wind storms. Inauguration day or thanksgiving storm in the mid 80's

That early 80's Thanksgiving storm is what really got me hooked on windstorms and weather in general! I was just in awe of the power of the wind, and also the memory of my dad trying to cook the Turkey on the BBQ...and no power for a week after!!! I miss those type of storms! The one last August and November 2015 were respectable but otherwise it's been so incredibly dull for wind storms for the past 10yrs.

Surprised it's so far offshore. Looks closer to the coast on the satellite images.

Apparently the storm is still deepening... 968 mb at Tatoosh Island... definitely an incredibly compact low.

Considering the center is further offshore than that, it probably bottomed out around 965mb.

Pretty amazing we couldn't manage more wind with a 965mb low that close to the NW tip of Washington.
