I hope next week's mild air does not pan out. If it does, temps could be flirting w/ near 50F.

Why? Would rather have 50F and no snow vs today's situation.

Another 2" December almost a lock. A fraction of the avg here (DTW) of 9". I remembered seeing these monthlies and how snowless they looked for November and Dec. So far, pretty darn accurate. IF they continue to score, then January would be the only decent month this far south in The Mitt. Further N looks better for both J & Feb.

It's been brutal today! It hasn't been much over 0 degrees all afternoon or evening here in Ashland!

While I've been in below zero weather before in the last area I lived, I have never experienced afternoon temperatures this close to zero. Looks like our 6 hour high/low was 3/-3.

On the day, midnight temp of 46 might read as the high, since that was right before the front came in, and we sharply dropped. It changed from heavy rain to huge blowing flakes in the same hour last night.

As this is a December event I will repost this here I already put this up in Pre Christmas.

Good morning.  Here at Grand Rapids, it has been snowing since 2PM on Thursday. Here in MBY it is hard to get good snowfall measurements but of the 6 that I took the range is from 8” to 15” and I have a drift of just over 2 feet. Note this is the total on the ground not the amount that has fallen in the last 30 plus hours. The amount of snow has been held down by small snowflake size and the winds have blowen the snow around a lot. In last week’s snow event when there was around 14” of lake effect I had amount that much on my roof and I used the snow rake to pull down snow at the edge of the roof there is not much new snow on the roof this time.

Even with the small snowflake size Grand Rapids did set a new snow fall record yesterday with 7.5” of snow fall. The old record was 5.9” in 2008. The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 15/5 and officially at GRR there was 7” on the ground at 7 AM The temperature has been rising overnight and here in my yard the low was 9 but is now up to 14 with moderate snow falling. For today at Grand Rapids the average H/L is 34/23 the warmest Christmas eve at GR was the 59 in 2015 and the coldest was -9 in 1944. The most snow fall is 7.5 in 1993, the most on the ground is 19” in 1951 there was 17” on the ground in 2008. At Muskegon while they reported heavy snow most of yesterday they only reported 3.8” of snow fall and had 8” on the ground. At Lansing they reported 5.9” and had a reported 4” at 7 AM yesterday.

It was a brutally cold day yesterday with wildly gusty winds and a balmy high temp of -1F, low of -8F.  I don't recall ever having a subzero high with only about 1-2" of Snow OTG.  This arctic air mass has some umff!  Next Wed high in the 40's will feel like a heat wave.  My furnace will be happy to take a little break.

Our low this morning reached 2.8 above zero here in East Nantmeal. This is the coldest reading since the 4.8 degrees below zero back on January 31, 2019. It is also the coldest December reading since the 1 degree above zero reading on December 22, 1989. A pretty incredible stat about the range of temperatures yesterday. There was a 50.9 degree difference between our high temperature of 55.4 and low of 4.5 degrees. That is the 2nd largest temperature range ever over 47,108 days or 129 years since record keeping began in Chester County on January 1, 1894. The largest range in temps ever was the 52 degree range we experienced on April 3, 1967 with a high of 81 degrees and a low of 29 degrees.
If the forecast high today of only 14 degrees is realized this will end up being the coldest daily average (+8.4 degrees) Christmas Eve in Chester County history. The current coldest Christmas Eve was the 9.5 average temp ( Hi 20 Lo -1) from 1983.
The record high for today is 68.5 degrees from 2015. The record low is the 2 below zero from 1980. Daily rain record is the 1.63" from 1986. The daily snow record is the 20.0" that fell today in 1966. That 2 day snowstorm ended giving us 21.2" of snow that included frequent thunder and lightning along with the heavy snow on Christmas Eve.

All historical weather data analytics posted by me is specifically for the climate of Chester County PA.  We continually analyze the actual raw non-adjusted NWS certified Coop observed climate data for Chester County.  There have been no post observation adjustments to any of the detailed analytics. All data is sourced from trained NWS observers and spotters. The life blood of science is to challenge what is thought to be known. The concept that climate change etc. is somehow “settled science” describes a religion - a belief system that does not welcome challenges. We should all continue to challenge science!    Snow Totals 2023/24 = 24.5" -  11/28 (0.3") / 12/7 (0.8") / 12/11 (0.8") / 1/6 (2.0") / 1/16 (2.8") / 1/19 (4.5") / 2/13 (10.5") / 2/17 (2.8")

Average Chester County PA Snow at elevations over 660 FT ASL (1983-Present) = 35.9" Snow totals by season: 2022/23 (2.7") /2021/22 (20.5")  2020/21 snow  (52.2") /  2019/20 snow (5.8" )/ 2018/19 snow (35.1" )/ 2017/18 snow (58.5") / 2016/17 snow (24.0")/ 2015/16 snow (40.8")/ 2014/15 snow = (55.3") /2013/14 snow (80.0").

High of -1 at ORD, making it the first December day to stay below 0 since Christmas 1983.  Impressive stuff.

Geeze, if you take out 1983 you would have to go way back over 100 years!  That is rather impressive.  Thanks for pulling up those stats.

Winds around here were hellacious. Lots of 55-70mph gusts measured across the region.

Tractor trailers blown off the road, structural damage, and tree damage as well.

None of the Mod's ever extended the storm thread dates even tho I mentioned NWS had snow going til at least today. So putting this here.

Anyways, NAM has some flakes flying here to ring-in Christmas, and actually keeps them going all night! Often with these LES events, the tail end works out pretty well for those further inland as convergence bands will snake across the state. Especially after dark. Timing looks perfect in that regard. Merry Christmas everyone!

DTX on this LES. Just looking at radar, wouldn't surprise me if they pulled the trigger on an SWS.

.UPDATE...

The evening update adds about an inch of snowfall to the forecast
based on lake effect performance between I-69 and I-96 this evening.
Intensity, areal coverage, and duration questions have been at least
partially answered by the latest observations, including the 00Z DTX
sounding. It shows a slightly higher convective depth compared to
model soundings that otherwise indicate steep mixed layer lapse rate
and high density of ice supersaturation in the cloud layer, all of
which are firmly in the DGZ. The update makes a conservative
extension of likely POPs/numerous coverage into the late night hours
roughly along the M-59 and I-96 corridors while continuing to assess
near term trends.

I tried to figure out how to edit the title bc normally I would click the cursor on the title and hold it until it enable you to edit the title.  They must have changed the way to do this bc it doesn't work anymore.  BTW, your point above is exactly what I was imagining would happen as those LES streamers off of LM would deliver some snow miles and miles off the lake.  Congrats on the late score!  Merry Christmas to you and your family Jaster!  Santa will have some snow OTG to ride his sleigh into town.

Meantime, I want to wish all of you a wonderful Christmas Holiday with your family and friends.  Tis the Season to enjoy all the Festivities this time of year brings and the wonderful food that comes with it!  This map on Christmas Day is one that hasn't been seen a little while!  It's mighty cold and half the Nation has snow OTG...

Merry Christmas! And this year is a white Christmas for sure. I have not gone outside to take any snow depth measurements, but I can tell you looking out the windows there is a lot of snow on the ground out this morning. 2022 will be one of the top snow depths in Grand Rapids history. The record snow depth at Grand Rapids for any Christmas morning is 22” in 1951 in 2nd place is 16” in 2000 in 3rd place was 2008 with 13. As of yesterday Grand Rapids has 14” reported at GRR. Yesterday’s 10.5” of snowfall at Grand Rapids sets a new record for any December 24th the old record was 7.5” in 1993.

The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 17/6 there was 0.45” of precipitation and a record 10.5” of snow fall. There was no sunshine. At the current time it is 16 here in MBY and there is light snow falling. In fact at GRR there now has been snow reported falling since 2PM on Thursday. As of 12 Midnight there has been 21.8” of snow fall in this snow event. Grand Rapids is now up to 64.6” for the season!  For today the average H/L is 34/23 The record high was 65 in 1982 and the low is -3 in 1983. The record snow fall for the day is 7.0” 2017.

We will finish off 2022 with a bonafide warm up but an active SW Flow pattern will set up delivering copious moisture in the West/SW and into our Sub Forum.  I like what I'm seeing for those who have been yearning for precip and snow out in the Plains.  As we open up 2023, a series of storms will deliver the prospects of Snow somewhere over the C Plains into the W GL's as the cold air will SLOWLY press and straddle the northern Tier.

@CentralNebWeather @gabel23and the NE crew should keep an eye out for the first week of JAN...

0z EPS...the blocking starting to show up over Canada and an active storm track under the Block up Top will keep our Sub active and more of a wintry component post 5th/6th of JAN.  Starting first out West & North, then cometh down into the S Plains/MW/OHV.

Thing about that is it will remain active.  Just need another storm not to cut and we will be back in the game.  But it looks for sure a week long thaw and significant rain is likely to start the New Year.

Merry Christmas to all! Yesterday was the coldest Christmas Eve average temperature since records began in 1894. The average temperature was 7.9 degrees beating the old record of 9.5 set in 1983.
Our AM low here in East Nantmeal was 11.2 degrees this is the coldest Christmas low temperature since the 10 degree reading in 1989. We should see below normal temperatures continue through Tuesday. A warming trend will get under way with temps reaching well into the 50's to near 60 by New Year's Day. That warming trend should carry us through the first week of the new year. There are signs of colder weather returning again around the 8th of January.
The record high today is 67 from 1964. The record low is 6 below zero set in 1980. Record precipitation is the 1.93" that fell in 2002...of note the rain turned to snow that Christmas morning with 5.8" of snow falling. The record snowfall on Christmas Day is the 13" that fell in 1909 of note that was just the beginning of a 2 day blizzard that would see another 25" falling the day after Christmas for a storm total of 38" that was the 2nd greatest snowstorm in Chester County history - behind only the 45.3" of snow that fell during the February Blizzard of 1899 ending on February 14, 1899.

Jumped in real quick to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!!!

It has been snowing lightly all day under that band coming from Lake Michigan and at times moderately. This gave me a 1-3inch thus far. Beautiful white Christmas this year. Nothing like falling snow on Christmas Day. 😀

I'm sure you guys in the snow belts have enjoyed this snowy stretch of weather during this Christmas week.  I'd be tickled with joy to see it snowing non-stop as it has been for the most part.  Have a blessed holiday and enjoy the freshly fallen snow!

Headed out early this morning to my sister's place. Had a solid inch of LES on the car and it was snowing, occasionally heavy a bit stronger as I headed north. Courier & Ives as everything was snow-covered. The trees, even the x-way at one point. Thought I was Up North for a minute. Most beautiful Christmas Day snow scene since the storm we caught on 12-25-17. Back home now, and I was still running through some lake streamers @Niko mentioned as I came south. It was sunny when I left, but you could see the dark clouds bank W to E about 10 miles south. Quite a bit more snow was had a couple counties north of Detroit, and drifts were feet high. Saw a drift pushed back by plows that had to be 6 foot. Not the deepest white for Christmas ever, but very memorable wintry conditions nonetheless.

We had a wonderful time with my entire family yesterday out in Lakemoore, IL (NW Burbs) celebrating Christmas.  Great bonding time with the kiddo's (nephews/nieces) and my siblings.  It was a nice drive up to my brothers house bc out where he lives the land opens up and it was covered with a blanket of snow, albeit, not the deepest I would have liked it to be, but nonetheless, it was a White Christmas and a COLD one!  The fireplace was glowing and this set the ambience...then the kiddo's were opening up presents after dinner.

Alright, now it's time to start tracking some storms as some "warm" W GL"s cutters are in the mix as we open up 2023....

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 19/14 there was 0.08” of precipitation that fell as 3.7” of snow. There is now officially 17” of snow on the ground at GRR here in MBY I have 18” on the ground. That official snow depth of 17” is the 2nd most for any Christmas morning in Grand Rapids with only the 22” in 1951 being more.  Here in my yard the overnight temperature held steady at 19 the official low at GRR was 17. For today the average H/L is 34/22 the record high of 61 was set in 2019 and the record low of -6 was set in 1951. The most snow fall of 11.9” fell in 2001. Starting Wednesday there will be an extended period of temperatures well above average with readings above 32 both day and night and that will cause a massive snow melt. There is also a lot of rain in the forecast.

Some final comments on the winter storm and cold that just wrapped up. It was 42 just before the cold front blew through on the 22nd. Temperature quickly dropped below 20F with freezing rain. I had to drive in that to get to my shift. ZR switched to snow by about 7-8am with light snow until about 2pm. It added up to 1.5" or so at my place. Temperatures fell to 2-4F by mid afternoon and stayed there through the morning of the 23rd. With the cold and the wind the wind chill was pretty rough, bottoming out near -20F. Temperatures stayed below 20F until the afternoon of the 24th and below freezing until the 25th. Looks like one more shot of cold but dry air this afternoon and then we warm up quick.

The pattern coming up looks mostly mild with increased rain chances. Not looking good for any wintry precip down here for a while.

We finished the combined Christmas Eve and Day holiday as the 3rd coldest in history behind only 1983 and 1980. Today should be our last below freezing day with our warming trend getting underway. We should stay dry till New Year's Eve. There is no sign of any cold weather returning till at least the 2nd week of January.
The record high for today is 67 degrees set in 1964. The record low is 2 below zero from 1980. The record precipitation is the 2.50" from 1909. That is also the record daily snow for the date as an additional 25" of snow fell on this date bringing the 2 day storm total to a whopping 38".

Merry Christmas (a day late)!

Snowfall so far this season looks like what one might expect with the heavier amounts to the north and the lesser amounts to the south. Not much in the middle part of the country though. Maybe another backloaded winter on the way for those areas...or not. lol
