why is there a gate, what are they scared of?  seems like the middle of bumblefuuck

Just silly status stuff.   And it's not that remote... only a couple miles off I-90 and can be at T-Mobile Park for a Mariners game in about 28 minutes.    At least in front of the stadium.   Parking is another issue.

00z GFS is the most perfect El Niño run ever. Precisely fits the canonical progression heading into midwinter. Might as well copy/paste those CPC ENSO maps and call it a day.

I'd say the odds are about +10000 for anything Arctic or snowy Salem south this fallspring.

Those windows are the only thing standing between the observatory scientists and certain death.

I think this is from last February, but still, eek.

Mt Washington here is pretty close to the Belknap gap. Didn't realize it was that windy there.

Eurasian pattern substantially worse for wave driving this run. Would probably result in a failed SSW (or quick PV recovery).

Pretty wild that last years blast produced a -20F / -39F day in Bozeman. Good enough for a -29.5F mean temp. Coldest day on record by a whole 2 degrees. I'm still struggling to wrap my head around that. Something that even 1983, 1989 couldn't pull off.

Of course the duration of 1983 was next level.

Yeah, I mentioned it recently but almost exactly a year ago Denver saw their second coldest day on record, with -6/-24.

And then that was followed up by another major blast in late January that delivered a couple days with -30 plus departures. And then yet another impressive, but brief event in late February that produced a -36 departure.

Absolutely. For TX/OK especially that thing was tops.

Daily depatures were around -45 in a lot of places down there. Sherman, TX had a maximum of 9, their lowest on record. OKC hit -14, their 2nd coldest on record.

Just not as widespread as 1983, but every bit as cold in the places it hit the hardest.

I kinda forgot about Feb 2021 here. Had a coldest high of 1 and coldest low of -16, both of which were the second latest that cold on record, behind only the Feb 1962 blast.

Coldest daily departure was -39.

i've seen 165 up there.  can't imagine 200+

the modern observatory forecasting room, the windows are bullet proof glass and occasionally get hit by airborne projectiles, especially when there is no snow cover

Cute graphic from NWS Medford. Looks like these chances reflect only this upcoming Christmas, and not in general probability (which was around 30-40% in Klamath Falls in the 2010's).

Definition of a White Christmas is an inch or more of snow. 2015 and 2010 were overperformers on that with 18" and 9" depths respectively.

Just 0.01” of rain here this morning.  Supposed to get windy later which will be nice to clear that stagnant damp air out or here.  It was 54F with thick fog when I was in town yesterday.  People were commenting this past week on how this is the foggiest winter they can remember.
