March 2024 Weather in the PNW

You were included in the WWA but 4-8” was more your forecast total according to the AFD. Still think it’ll bust low.

Some forecasts were calling for 1-4", but yeah you're right the NWS was calling 4-8".

How much snow are you up to now, a few inches? We've got about 6" now, us being further south helps, this time La Pine is going to be the winner of our area.

Pretty amazing how quickly a little sun and warm temperatures can wipe out snow this time of year. Not a flake remains of my 2” from this morning, but it was pretty nice to see it. That bumped my total up to 7” on the winter which is 7” more than I was expecting.

I went out to the daffodil fields as the snow was stopping. Pretty cool to see the flowers under a bit of snow.

It’s all about the sun. I went out to the Columbia River Gorge yesterday and there’s still lots of snow at the bottom on the Oregon side in areas that don’t see any sun. This is snow leftover from the January event.

The snow has picked up a bit here again.  This must be the stuff the ECMWF was showing.

How often do you get snow up there when the surrounding area has rain? At 1000ft you should get a bunch of snow

The problem with that area is it sits so close to Lake Washington and is prone to south winds.  They get more than the surrounding area, but not that much more.

I was about to say the same thing. Newport hills. ( I assume that is where he lives) is a bit to far west. Still does better than Seattle/Bellevue proper though.

A 1,000 feet out here where I live gets significantly more snow.

Starting to run out of moisture but have had some nice light snow for the last hour. Will that band of moisture down south make its way north?

That light snow started to coat elevated surfaces again/ slush on the ground. Always nice

You guys are going to score even more than you normally do compared to us. I’m only up to about an inch and that’s just in certain areas. Heaviest snow of the night now though and should continue so should track closer to you throughout the night. Over 40” for the season now so I’m happy with back to back 40”+ years.

Matlock has been the big winner

They have had 3-5 inches of snow on the ground for days, it snowed most of the day. That area kicks butt for snow. They can get more than here. You can throw a rock to the Olympics there.

It’s too bad it’s not cold enough for snow down to 200’ feet or so tonight like it is up north. There has been a decent band of precip sitting over the Portland area the last few hours. Just 36 degree rain though. Barely any flakes even mixed in.

I run quite a bit on Cougar Mountain in the winter, that area gets dusted often but rarely anything significant. It does seem like 1,000 ft tends to be the snow line in this type of cold, onshore airmass. Wilderness Peak is 1,400 ft and sometimes I go there to get my snow fix if it’s raining in Seattle, but it’s usually just an inch or two. Squak Mountain at 2,000 ft doesn’t do much better unless it’s actual arctic air. As we were discussing the other day, the back side of Tiger Mountain does much better at an equivalent elevation where the cold air can stick a little longer, that’s the only spot where I worry about not being able to get through in running shoes.

Been the story of the whole week. We never quite made it to the magic -8c level with this airmass. -6c and persistent southerly flow just isn't enough to get it done.

Wilderness peak is just a bit too far west I notice. Tiger Mountain is usually the dividing line and is far enough east to get fairly significant snows. Pretty much all the Hills above 1,000 feet east of Hwy 18 get significantly more snow in winter.

Ended up with 28.2" since last Thursday as things wind down. Great event. One of our best late season events, not quite on par with last year around this time, not nearly as cold, but for a 5-day period it's one of our best stretches. Pretty much the same amount of snow as the December 2021 event, though we had deeper snow cover with that one due to colder temps. The temps with this one were pretty impressive though, especially the cold maxes. 36,32,34,33 to start the month. About as cold as it gets for highs in early March. Seems like this one really over performed, the SW flow on the showers was probably a big factor, that's always great for this area and they tend to focus and train along the Silverton Hills in that pattern. As Jesse mentioned earlier, the cloud cover has been very consistent too, which is part of what has helped keep valley highs so chilly too.

Nice dry 30 degree air. Where is the precip!! My number 1 complaint about this climate it this right now. I can get 75 inches of rain a year but have to claw and scratch for 2 tenths when it's cold lol. It's so ridiculous all you can do is laugh.

That is the end of organized precip until around mid-day Saturday.   A nice 4 day break ahead and then a bunch of rain over the weekend into early next week.
