SilverFallsAndrew
We've had about 25 freezes so far. I'm surprised N. Bend has only had 5, they appear to be in a valley, I would think there would be some radiational cooling there. Two factors... we have had way more cloudiness up here overall and then when it clears out the east wind usually kicks in and we have downslope warming. North Bend is a great place for lowland snow and a bad place for frosty nights as we have discussed many times. 1 Quote **REPORTED CONDITIONS AND ANOMALIES ARE NOT MEANT TO IMPLY ANYTHING ON A REGIONAL LEVEL UNLESS SPECIFICALLY STATED**

Similar to Agassiz in the Fraser Valley. Gets a lot of cloud banked up against the mountains and when it’s clear there is often offshore flow. It can get really cold there, as cold as anywhere west of the mountains but they have only had 1 freeze this season. December 1st was the only day they dropped below freezing. That is very possible in our changing climate. I think it’s fair to include the late December 1968 airmass in the overall mid-winter pattern that year. Nothing moderate there. We haven’t really approached cold like that since.

It was probably the most anomalous thing regionally about that winter, but I think the snow is its enduring legacy. 1 Quote Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! Gradient Keeper
4:31 PM Pressure Gradients Offshore gradients have really steepened the past 8-12 hours with gusty winds returning for those living east of I-205. A quick study of the 12z WRF-GFS modeled at 4 PM shows a PDX-DLS gradient of -7mb and the 12z MM5-NAM at -7mb. This is running 3 to 3.5mb too weak as the gradient is currently a lofty -10.5mb. This may strengthen further tonight with weak pressure falls approaching from the southwest coupled with a modest surface high over the Columbia Basin, and a stratus/low cloud field over the lower Columbia Basin leading to a marginal 'cool' pool where temps remained in the upper 20s to low 30s today. Those factors should work in tandem to intensify the east winds further. As of yet there is no Wind Advisory out for areas East of I-205/Gorge, but I would not be surprised to see one for gusts 40-50mph. Stronger for Corbett, Crown Point. As of 4 PM [Gorge/Gap Gradient] PDX-DLS: -10.5mb TTD-DLS: -9.9mb [Cross Cascade Gradient] PDX-YKM: -10.0mb PDX-MWH: -10.4mb PDX-GEG: -10.5mb OTH-GEG: -13.3mb *Legend: PDX = Portland, DLS = The Dalles, TTD = Troutdale, YKM = Yakima, MWH = Moses Lake, GEG = Spokane, OTH = North Bend A -Negative value denotes easterly/northerly flow A +Positive value denotes westerly/onshore flow

Probably, but I never thought I'd see a December 2008 in my life either. I never thought I'd have 30" of snow on the ground Christmas morning. 12z runs. Well, the GFS/GEFS is crappy if you want Cold and SNOW!(For the lowlands), but it does show a change to wet and mountain snows. I liked the 12z GEM/CMCE, EURO/EPS though showing a big Aleutian ridge sliding east with heights rising towards Western Alaska. Some promise there. C'MON!!!! Yeah but my point is it illustrates how much colder the background state was that year. Which of course is why even a January 1969 repeat leaving out the late December airmass would be a very tall order.
