January 2021 weather observations for the PNW

Though we had 1"+ snowfall on 18 days in February 2019, we never had more than 6.5" in a day. We were a bit south for the big event Tim and Snowmizer are discussing, and a bit north of TWL's big late month event. That is how the coldest and snowiest February on record ended up leaving me with a tinge of disappointment.

One thing I agree with Jim on is that good Februaries often come in bunches.

1995 will always serve as the greatest single lesson in local weather randomness. Very much in line with Brady Anderson’s 50 home run season a year later.

Close in the RGEM.  Most models are picking up on a secondary low forming near the strait that will become the dominant low later today.

From my perspective I can’t find 2 teams I hate more than the ones in the NFCCG right now. I dislike Arians and don’t want Brady with another SB. Same thing can be said about Rodgers. Of 4 remaining teams, I’m rooting hard for the Bills on the side either way.

If you remember... I made a prediction that we would score in the Feb 1-5 period in the middle of January and stuck with it.  

I made comments about individual runs but overall I was pretty optimistic that it would work out.   It did look pretty bleak until about 1/26 and then it came into focus and Jim came back for good.

Yeah, the past couple of summers have been terrible for smoke and last year the fire near where I live. That was some scary stuff!

Of course showing us how it all changed in late January 2019 probably guarantees that 2021 will go in a totally different direction!

Yeah we had to evacuate for 8 days because of the Beachie Creek Fire. Glad you didn’t lose your home in the fires down there.

The summer of 2020 was almost totally smoke-free up here... the smoke issues did not arrive until after Labor Day.   And then we had one of the worst weeks I have ever seen.

Last summer we had what maybe 2 or 3 days of smoke but the rest was way better than previous years until the fire in Ashland.

Temps have pretty much flatlined here since about 4-5pm yesterday. Been hanging around 38-40 since the cloud moved in.

Sitting just under .30". Could have been a decent snow event if it panned out right. Andrews negative attitude is certainly at fault.

Also, this is an incredibly slow moving system... in fact, I think it’s pretty much stalled out. This could’ve produce some decent snow, so a missed opportunity had it been just a little bit colder.

Very light sprinkles here all day.   Barely enough to keep the ground damp.   You could stand out there for a hour and not get wet.

Yeah we’ve only had .03” of precip. Just some drizzle and occasional flurry bursts now. Still only 34 despite the light precip, so it hasn’t really been the temp that has been the issue, just no precip.

Baja California Norte has mountains over 10,000 feet high. Normal for the high country to get snow in the winter.

The funny thing is if we were still in a torchy pattern or under a death ridge right now we would be begging for a pattern like we have the next 5-7 days. Chilly with snow chances at times and fantastic mountain snow conditions.

If a run showed today's pattern at day 10 some would be drooling over it and saying it was a fantastic run. It's all about expectations I suppose.

Over on the Canadian forum today, there’s a bunch of disappointed Vancouverites who got needlessly excited by the same sort of slop-over from modeling the Coast Mountains for today’s snowfall. It was pretty clear what was happening: the only lowland areas with color instead of gray were ones close to the mountains.

There was a lot of modeling that was showing legitimate snow. Not slop over.  You don’t get a lot of that from the hi res mesoscale models. They were just wrong.
