January 2021 weather observations for the PNW

The 18z GFS looks really promising in the 10 to 15 day period.  Major GOA blocking with a trough carving out over the NW.

Precip rates still seem a little light out this way. Down to 38 though after a high of just 39.

Just hit 0.40" for the day here, about what most models were showing.

It's small but one potential good sign I've noticed in the 500mb ensembles at the beginning of February is that rather than continuously retrograding the trough farther and farther offshore which earlier runs were showing, there seems to be a consensus building to nudge the ridge a little closer to the coast.

I will definitely take that 18z GFS run.  Not perfect, but pretty D**n solid.  The parallel is running extremely slow on this run so it will be a while before we know what that shows.

MJO 7 suggests a ridge axis in the 140 to 150 range in most cases.

Just made a flight from Truckee-Tahoe airport to Lake Tahoe KTVL in the Cub with live weather (FSX).  As real as it gets...lol. I have the Truckee airport streaming on my iPad.  Feel like I’m there

I do like the 18Z.  Continual cooling from day 10 onward and several nice snowfall possibilities.  I'm not on board but I'm thinking of stepping on the gang plank.

The swells are so big that the top of those waves will feature snow!

Changing over to almost all wet snow here as the back edge of the precip approaches. Temp has been slowly dropping over the past few hours.

40/37 today 0.19” so far on the day currently 39. GO BUCS! So glad the packers lost couldn’t be happier. Nice 18z run too seems to like the idea of multiple snow chances this week.

Very wet snow kinda abating now but it was cool to watch for a bit. Nice to see for sure— couldn’t have asked for more (well yeah I could have but I’ll take what I can get).
