Looks like 850mb temps this morning over SLE were only -5.7C. -17.7 at Spokane, -7.1 at UIL.

Current look at the hourly one from what I could tell PDX bottomed out a little under -11c earlier

I think the point that airports are more exposed locations does make some sense. Celilo is only 31 though, and they are VERY exposed, enough so that the NWS does not recognize the 121 or whatever they hit in June as the all-time state record.

Be interesting to see what SLE hits on the 00z sounding. I was a little surprised by the -5.7C reading this morning.

I always thought the thermometers needed to be in some sort of housing for official stations but obvious immediate surroundings would still play a role there can be lots of little issues that can make stations run a few degrees too warm or cold VUO ran too warm for years until they finally got around to fixing it then in December it started running too cold until they had to fix it again not sure what the mechanics behind either case were

No, not really. Looks like EUG was forecast to bottom out right around -7.4C this afternoon. 

Getting those lower dewpoints down to the south valley is probably more important for cold lows tonight at this point.

Well Wednesday night Thursday morning might give some people a dusting of snow. Overall so far not a bad event at all had some light snow yesterday and almost full sunshine and 35 in the middle of the afternoon.

Most area stations are 30-33, there are a couple outliers in the 36/37 range. The one thing I was thinking is The Dalles airport is actually on the Washington side of the gorge, so perhaps it is warmer on that side in the afternoons due to the sun reflecting off the rocks of the gorge behind it?

A high in the low 40s with full sunshine after a low of only about 32 is pretty impressive. If 850s were around 0C with full sunshine you would easily be well into the 50s today. Just really tough to keep the lowest levels cold this time of year due to sun angles, without a really really cold airmass or cloud cover/precip.

Why is solar insolation so much more of a bitchh here? Proximity to the ocean even in offshore setups? I don't understand it.

Honestly I don't know, maybe someone else can answer that. But living at 1600' it's very noticeable it's really hard to cool that bottom 1000', probably for the reason you mentioned. Even today, looks like it is 31 and 30 at the two stations closest to my house, so that's like a 12F difference with SLE.

Could be the culprit. Looks like a station on the WA side of Hood River is also reporting 36F. So could just be a southern exposure kind of thing going on.

We don’t advect cold all that well here. Without seriously burley advection or stratiform precip, late October sun angles are gonna do their thing to some extent. It’s the birds and the bees of borderline climates.

Are these clouds in Washington going to clear tonight? I am glad we've cleared out so nicely down here. I know many of you would take 1/2" of snow over a sub-25 low, but that's not how I roll.
