It is okay to be wet and cool in the spring when living in the PNW.

Normal spring weather around here is bad enough.    😀

44°F and 0.86" for the day. Recent rains are noticeably different from winter rains.  No more losing entire days to rainfall, plenty of opportunities for dry walks with birds chirping and frogs croaking. You just might get caught in a brief hail downpour, which is fun in its own way with kids.

I agree completely, especially with the extra 4 hours of daylight we have every day.

I don't know what the talk about this month (or this winter) being dreary and depressing in Western Washington is about. I spend at least an hour if not more outside everyday and it's been beautiful the last couple weeks. Sure, some days have featured rain, but quite a few of them haven't and the Cascade snowpack has been building which is nice to see after a quiet Jan/Feb. Definitely happy to live in a place where water is not a problem and (hopefully) fire season will be as quiet as it usually is on the west side.

18Z GFS shifted the precip farther north overall compared to the 12Z GFS... looks like the ECMWF and EPS.

Apparently a pattern in which the storm track goes through CA is impossible now.    That can be pretty common as we move into the ULL season.     I guess there are hints of that on this run showing a little wetter than normal for SoCal.

The first part of March was actually pretty nice.    The last week has been pretty dreary overall... particularly the last 3 days for the Seattle area.     Looks like a better pattern is coming... not totally dry but also not perpetual warm front drizzle which has been happening here since Saturday evening.

Temps are slowly rising now as the warm front is lifting north.    This pattern has been unfavorable for frosty nights... which seems to be allowing the spring green up to accelerate.

We’ve been getting high temps consistently in the 50s for a couple weeks now…and just one freeze on 3/10. Cherry blossoms are showing up on the trees…spring is pretty close now.

I see Tim has been trying to drive home the narrative that it’s been quite wet. Like drilling it into our heads on a daily basis. Gives him an argument for when it starts to dry around here and argue with people for bringing up dry weather. Going to be FUN! 🤣

Do you also have a problem with the National Weather Service? They tweeted this today:

"Seattle winter stats using full days (Dec. 22 to Mar 19 ). 78 years of records.
Avg. temperature 41.2°, 2.7° below normal (26th coldest).
Total precipitation 16.42", 2.40" above normal (20th wettest).
Number of days measurable precip. 43 (49%), normal  51 days.

Again... totally off point.     All of my comments are in relation to normal and departures from normal.  Not that it's rainy here.   That is a given.    But we do have lots of nice days per climo... and we are due. 👍

50/41 0.41” today and 2.79” this month. Running -0.5 for the month and we’re at about 60% of normal rainfall for March.
Overall, it’s been a decently wet rainy season. Classic nina rainy season and overall cooler than normal/average temps with the exception of November.

Only below normal rainfall month SEP-MAR was December…with about 80% of normal rainfall. Every other month has been at or above normal rainfall.
If the euro is right…we will be at about 80% of the average rainfall for March. Averaging out the last 6 months the whole period here has been slightly wetter than normal…despite the weather overall being very dry from mid January all the way to the end of February.

Are you sure about that?

Seattle had less rainy days than usual over the winter per the NWS. January offered extensive dry, sunny weather. February did as well. December brought dazzling clear, cold weather with snow on the ground. Precipitation has been concentrated into large rainfall events. This winter has been generous to you, if anything.

Hell, I'd say we're majorly overdue for a +EPO/-PNA/-ENSO troughfest with a chilly April-June. It's been over a decade.

+7.84 here since 10/1. Looking at the euro…we would finish the 10/1-3/31 period about +6.50 roughly. I wouldn’t call it much wetter than normal but yes definitely wetter than normal.

Totally agree about the nature of this rainy season.    I prefer getting lots of rain all at once with more dry days mixed in.    The 'days with rain' statistics for this winter were pretty favorable.     But its also been very wet.    And its been wetter than normal every month since September except for December... so statistically we are likely to see some drier than normal months coming up.    Doesn't mean it will happen though.

+7.84 inches is significantly wet.     A deficit of 7.84 inches would not be called slightly drier than normal   ;)

I get the feeling either April or may will be a warmer drier than normal month. I don’t sense this spring will be like some of the springs we had a decade ago like 2011. This March will likely be the wettest March since 2017 here however despite likely being below normal.

I thought last summer was going to be cool and wet... in the middle of a multi-year Nina at the bottom of the solar cycle.  That did not happen.  I have absolutely no idea what this spring and summer will be like.

This is not entirely true.   Andrew was on a roll trolling today so I just responded with actual stats.

But yeah... there is no denying that it's been very wet rainy season up here.    No matter how hard Andrew wants all of us to be moping around kicking the dirt and lamenting how it never rains any more.  That is the sad Andrew showing up today.

Anyone denying that it hasn’t been wet this past fall and winter is joking themselves. Seattle even had an above average snowfall season. This LaNina delivered.

The issue is that it has been wet in your area as well as much of coastal WA at least to the Cascades, but it has been drier than average to megadrought-dry in the rest of the West as a whole. Your area has received more rain than about 95% of the West, and it is time for the pattern to change that allows storms to penetrate other parts of the West that really need it! Other people who have been complaining about the lack of rain have experienced quite a dry year compared to you and others who live in the zone that has been wet.
