PNW December 2022, winter might be coming; but mostly canceled.

Just ugly outside now.  Grey, wet, and drippy.  I hope the models are right about it freezing tonight.  I'm far from convinced.

Monday and Tuesday look absolutely amazing here. 30s and clouds with spotty drizzle. Not being ironic, it's some of my favorite outdoors weather.

The commute will be ugly tomorrow if it does get down to freezing. We’ve been in this cool/cold spells long enough now for surfaces to freeze more easily.

Looks like areas north of Seattle will enjoy a good freeze tonight at least.

Me too.  It looks we have a shot tonight, but the next two nights look cloudy.  Could be later in the week to get our freezing nights back.

You'd probably like the climate in Campbell River, at least as far as coastal climates go. They had a high/low of 31F/12F today. Pretty ridiculous for a place on the ocean with +2~5c 850mb temps.

-5 departure at EUG, SLE, and PDX today.

Makes me feel good that SLE got the first sub 40 high of the year at any of those stations.

Remember they don’t measure at the airport… But it was a record. Eugene also recorded their 2nd trace of the month.

4:44 PM I see the infamous warm nose/tongue/nostril is moving north up the Cascade Foothills. Wanderer's Peak(4350') is now up to 30 F, winds S 9 G 20mph. Horse Creek(3402') is 33 with winds SSW 4 G 8mph. Upper Air Temps shows warming aloft around Marion and Clackamas Counties slowly lifting northward. The Columbia Basin cold pool still looks pretty healthy with 925mb temps at -5c.

Thanks. So, the .01" at 10:05 AM, that is when the first measurable snowfall occurred? I need to know exactly for the snowfall contest in my PDX WX Analysis FB group.

Our 0.5” today was not a daily record. We had about 4” on this date in 2016. Actually our biggest one day total that month.

Reached 1" of slop here for the day. Nice achievement just before the precip runs out.

The southern metro area curse continues. Zero accumulation here besides some brief sticking on the cars/deck for 15 minutes. Just was a few miles south of the best dynamics.

Been over on the sports thread.  So Portland was a bust???

Wouldn't really call it that. Some folks in favored spots or with a little elevation did pretty good. Most folks like myself that live in Portland proper or west metro saw it snow a lot but ended up with just a dusting. Probably would have ended up with 1-3" of snow if it had stuck but alas this was more or less advertised as a razor thin situation. IMO a bust would have been cold rain.

The next 3 days are going to be weather purgatory. Cool/chilly, with no precip, not much sunshine, and nights just above freezing. Hoping we get a little more clearing than anticipated.

I’d say this one ended up just about right down the middle as far as it’s potential goes. Hard to expect much more with the air mass in play.

Yeah, I didn't really expect much down here. This spot is always going to struggle in borderline situations anyways. It is nice to start the winter off with some snow in the air at least.
