MSP, FSD, DEN, SLC all fit within the area that I've been saying that have done well. Throw in places like RNO, TVL, FLG and you have a very large area of the US that is seeing a very decent winter. The areas seeing it are where we needed it most which makes it an even bigger win. 

You said the northern tier has done really well. The Midwest definitely has a northern tier and it certainly hasn't done too well east of I-35  

There's a very large  geographic stretch of the country that has been warmer than average and below average for snowfall. Then there's a much smaller and more sparsely populated section of the country where it's been different.

5.8" of nickel/dime snow for SEA is respectable, I guess. Assuming that that's it for the year, I don't know that I would call it "good".

If you look at the last 90 day temp anomaly it hasn't been that warm nationally certainly not a great winter but there have been worse. 60 day is noticeable warmer.

The precursor patterns were strong in 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2020/21. All culminated a major SSW events that culminated in bonafide “blocking” patterns that redirected RWTs, which is how they delivered in the PNW and elsewhere across the NH.

There is nothing even remotely close to that going forward. To the contrary, the upcoming NH pattern will help strengthen the PV/TPV and lock up the arctic airmass in the high latitudes. Even though it’s a “cool” pattern for the west, it will become progressively less continental (and less cool in general) as the polar airmass gradually retracts. And may eventually end up warm/zonal altogether.

The pattern may grow more favorable for upward wave driving during the second half of February, but that pattern itself is associated with warmth in the PNW/other places. So that pattern, should it manifest, will take at least a couple weeks to knock out the vortex, at which point we will be into March.

Not ready to close the curtain just yet, but it’s getting close.

We've had 0 wind since at least midnight. Not a breeze! 

And 17.6* is the low for the day for me. Really seeing how well the pellet stove heats the house when it gets this cold!

The only comparable winter here so far for temps and snowfall would be 1992-1993. It's been a long time since we have seen sustained cold from early Nov into Feb.

Doesn’t look like it’ll be the coldest low of the winter (19 on 12/22) but still pretty cold for Tacoma.
