How is the prospect of east wind looking for the PDX area Friday and Saturday? Are models missing some of this?

Gradients are weakly southerly on Friday. Early Saturday morning things should take on an ESE bent for Portland, which is when our window for sticking snow should begin. As long as precip rates cooperate that timeframe should be good for lots of 32-33F snow, IMO.

On Saturday evening a true gorge push will get going as the low passes to our south. Probably some decent outflow with it as the low looks sub-1000mb.

The Mon/Tues wave looks much better positioned this run versus 12z (so far). Father east and not closing off early..still trucking south down the BC coast.

By 7PM Saturday many places are at or near a foot of snow.

Again, this is 2-4 inches snowier for many places vs. 12z.

EPSL looks to get a little less probably because the east wind drying. Hoping it's overdoing that aspect like it was for this last event.

And not at the expense of inland areas which is usually the case when you make this comment. ;)

I have a soft spot for the coast regardless of what happens here. This thing keeps looking more and more like 2-12-95.

Nice work. It’s funny, I actually haven’t seen 1956 come up too much in comparisons yet but that was another consistently cold February.

I could easily imagine this month scoring a 37-39F average at PDX. And that is pretty conservative.

The crazy thing is, after 2/6, 1956 only had two sub-40 days at PDX (they were both below freezing as well).

So this thing is looking like it should easily outdo 1956 from a later-in-the-season perspective.

Snowiest GFS run yet for Seattle. Just absolute buries Puget Sound Friday night into Saturday morning with unbelievable heavy snow in the deformation band. Shows 15" for Seattle in about 18 hours.

Low comes in near Reedsport or slightly south, we should have some good banding.

Costco 4th ave is a zoo right now with people stocking up.  Lots of people were asking about de-icer and duraflames.  Unfortunately, they were out of both and the seasonal section is now filled with swimming goggles, sunblock and beach towels.  I did happen to see Rich Marriott in line.

I've been trying to figure out what year it was that dropped 32 inches in feb around hood canal and i think that was the storm. Some places had over 40 near the Olympics. I know there was strong offshore flow.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

By 7AM Saturday.

12z showed 4-5 inches by this time. Definitely snowier.

Good golly Ms Molly! The epic runs just keep happening!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Wave-3 about to round the ridge @ hr156. Could be a bit farther west than 12z but there should be a healthier antecedent cold air draw given a healthier downstream wavecycle.

Will be interesting!

Snow totals in PDX aren't as impressive as the precip maps would suggest because the GFS is thinking a chunk of the snow is falling as non-sticking 33-34F snow.

gfs_mslp_pcpn_frzn_nwus_23.png

It shows as snow on this map but the soundings show 34F at PDX with some SW flow. If it is off by even a degree or two, that will swing the snow totals greatly. Hopefully the gorge influence can get us something with that.
