My dad always talks about our pipes freezing in December 1990.

Pipes at my dad’s shop burst in 1989 after which I specifically remember him saying at least we don’t need to worry about it happening again any time soon. Burst again in 1990. Haven’t burst since, but he’s currently in the process of selling the biz, so it seems like it could be poetic justice ON ROUTE.

I dont know why but i do not remember the cold in 1989 but i remember 1990 like yesterday. 89 must of been almost no snow here?

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

As a lifelong northwesterner I have seen snow and ice impact each location differently. Seattle is farther north but Portland has the gorge. Sometimes the arctic air doesn't reach Portland, sometimes it comes in backdoor through the gorge. I have to say the freakiest time I ever saw was in January of 1980. For a week it snowed in all areas within 20-25 miles of the gorge. The temperature remained below freezing the entire time. If you went on 26 to Beaverton it was snowing in downtown Portland, on the other side of the tunnel it was raining. I have never seen the like since then.

It’s been so mild this winter I haven’t even bothered shutting off our outside taps yet

This with Dec 2021. The only loser out of it happened to be Portland so it got soured.

Sherwood got 7" where I'm at, and my then apartment in Corvallis got about 10" (though the Sherwood one was spread over 4 days and melted out almost every day).

Hey Tanis,

I didnt realize you were in sherwood, my profile picture is from '21 walking down to Stella Olsen Memorial Park. I dont post much, but I go back with y'all, been on the OG KPTV weather blog since 2010, then the various FB groups, now this place. Nice to see some familiar faces again.

Willamette Valley special. Eugene up to Salem had about 6-12" of snow with it. Raging outflow at PDX prevented significant accumulations there. Last time SLE got below 0.

Yeah, he called me "not the brightest bulb of the bunch." I was a bit chapped about that for a while.

Here is the morning of 12/30/21 from 216 hours out on the Euro showing a low of -5º for EUG. Actual low temperature that day: 32º.

Screen Shot 2021-12-21 at 11.01.30 AM.png

I had forgotten the models went quite that extreme in December 2021. Here the low was only 26F on December 30th, but it was 6F on the 27th so at least something verified.

He has an old farm house that is built on a pretty high foundation, so air really gets under there. He's sealed it off over the past few years, and completely repiped after his pipes burst again in December 2009, so hopefully he wouldn't have the same issue if we experienced a similar event.

The coldest we got during that event was 18 I believe. Not stellar, especially with 20" of snow depth to help with radiational cooling. Like with so many cold events, we really struggled to get any clearing until the coldest air had moved out of the region. Our coldest temp of that winter was in late February with what is now a completely forgotten cold snap.

Thing about tornadoes is you have no idea if one will impact you until it’s basically right there. Can’t really say that about any other weather phenomena…and tornadoes are also the most likely to kill you if you encounter one. Worst of the worst.

Salem didn’t get below 0 during the winter of ‘13-‘14 when Eugene hit -10? That same year Redmond hit -27 twice I believe. Once in Dec and once in Feb.

Big-time accumulations for most of the Puget Sound too with the Arctic front. SEA had about 6", OLM got almost a foot.

They didn't have snow cover and only managed 8.

Corvallis had some (though not as deep as EUG) and hit 2.
