I got today off thank god. 17 degrees up at my worksite on Highway 18. I was slated to work today to drain the pond. Tried to explain to my boss how cold it was really going to be…and that water treatment wouldn’t be possible today. Feel bad for my co-workers who are probably up there trying to thaw everything out 😂

Wow, down to 21 now. Imagine how cold tonight’s gonna be here! The number I’m hoping to beat here is 14 degrees in November 2010. If we beat that with 0 snowcover it would be astonishing.

You might. BLI just recorded its coldest temperature since the 1980’s without any snow.

Looks like Two Medicine Bridge was the coldest in MT this morning at -40F.

Tonight outta be fun to see just how low we go! -40 in Bozeman looks like a good bet with some -50's in the usual cold spots of MT.

Temperature dropped to 10.6F this morning so I wasn't wrong last night when I said that we wouldn't reach single digits, but it dropped better than I expected. This is my 4th coldest Arctic blast I've recorded on my weather station (since 2008) and the coldest without snow cover. I think it would feel more special if I hadn't had single digits the previous two winters, but I'm not complaining. Car wouldn't start this morning so I had to jump it before heading off to work.

Tonight looks like it will be nearly as cold if not a little colder. Obviously colder down south, but it's less clear up here. The Euro/GEM forecast temperatures a couple degrees colder while the GFS/NAM is a bit warmer. Would really love to see single digits, but not sure if that's going to happen. High at midnight was 21F, but I think we'll get warmer than that during the day. Probably hit 23/24F today.

Some food for thought on what the models are showing. If they are off on the northern extent of the precip shield, these totals will be low (see Feb 2014), off on the dynamics (see Jan 2017), off on the battle between WAA and the cold to the east (lots of examples). This is a high variance event. Literally nothing between 2-12" would surprise me at all for the PDX metro. The one scenario I would be surprised with is a shutout (trace to 2"), especially those in Multnomah county.

12z UKMET trended further north with the snowfall. You can see the classic warm tongue signature on the snow map. Hopefully it’s overdoing it. I find it hard to believe Salem and Corvallis get more snow than PDX.

That good thing about the UKMET is it thinks Corvallis/Salem will be cold enough for 4”+ of snow. If that’s the case it must be over aggressive with the warm tongue. I don’t think a snow map like this is even possible. Models are really struggling handling this event.

There are guidelines for how much BTU/hr of heating capacity one needs, and for some reason those who install electric heat often chintz and fail to meet them. I wouldn’t be able to keep this place at a decent interior temperature in this sort of weather without an extra plug-in space heater in the living room.

@MossMan, if your lake freezes solid without any snowfall, you could give this a shot.

Can confirm this happens. Works best with thin ice. Given how cold it is, could probably do it this morning on small ponds. Those don't take long to freeze over.

Planning on taking a marsh walk on Sunday. Everything should be frozen solid by then. The small, shallow ponds should be skateable by then.
