February 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

With 12.56" of rain this month, downtown LA has seen their fourth wettest February on record, and is only about an inch behind the wettest on record (Feb 1998).

They have already blown past their average annual precip, after a 2023 that saw more than double average rain.

I already told my sons that one of them will have to come home and clear the driveway if we get enough snow.    Not going to try doing that with a partially torn ACL.   Good news is that one of my sons will be skiing all the time if the mountains get buried and he loves clearing the driveway.   In fact he probably wouldn't even use the snowblower because he likes making bigger snowbanks by shoveling.   😀

Your son sounds like me. I actually enjoy shoveling and I like to place the snow where I want it.

Looks like the highest temp San Diego has seen this February is just 66. Parts of the PNW got warmer than that on 1/28!

While some of the west sides have had good scores with Feb, it wasn't a good month in K-Falls from 2020-2022. I forgot if they had snow last February down there. They went from a top tier snowy/cold one to multiple dry ones in a row..

Doesn't look like Klamath Falls even tracks snowfall?

They have CoCoRaHs sites there, one of them I followed most got taken off the network I think but there is another in downtown that I hope is reliable.

But yeah, their airport doesn't report snow.

Monday should be a fun day. Given the frigid 850s, it isn't surprising that the Euro has some surface CAPE and lightning on Monday. Every little shower is likely to be a graupel producer...the better organized stuff could drag the snow level down to the surface. I also like that the vort max is expected to swing through in the late afternoon hours (although that could change)...the combo of springtime surface heating and some upper level lift tends to make for some fun weather. It will be interesting to see what the meoscale models think of that setup once it gets in range.

Greatness is within arms reach for the lowlands. Just gotta get a bit more precip, and the low to go more south.

I have often thought Peshastin would be the perfect mix for me.  Kind of a split between Leavenworth and Cashmere.

Definitely more snow than Cashmere.  Probably  cheaper to live there too compared to town.  And the Wenatchee River runs right through that area.  Also close access to highway 97, which goes to Blewett Pass and then you can access I-90.

Snow shoveling/snow blowing is usually quite enjoyable, especially making a giant pile of snow that will take atleast weeks to melt, but by then I usually get more snow so I just keep adding to the pile.

The warm layer of water in the eastern Equatorial Pacific is paper thin now.  When that cold bubble surfaces the crash will be spectacular.

42/26 next Tuesday on the ECMWF.  Nice little cold shot.

The amount of rain after that is probably over done.

Temps crash back down to below normal after this. Maybe a 24hr period of near or above normal temps.

That's what it looks like at this point.  This Graph Cast run was much quicker to push the second trough eastward like the EPS has shown.
