So comparing December 2022 to 2021 is interesting. 2021 was definitely a much more solid event altogether but this month will likely be atleast 1-1.5 degrees colder than 2021. Still 2 pretty solid decembers in a row.
                                2021         2022

sub 40 highs          8                9

sub 32 highs          4                2

Snowfall days        8                 6

measurable snow 11.0”            4.1”

coldest max          24               25

coldest min           16                19

Mean temp           -2.1            -4.2*

Down here last December pretty much torched the first 3 weeks, and then got cold Christmas Eve. So kind of the opposite of this year. Despite that I would definitely take last year. 27” of snow here vs 3.4” here this December. Plus the cold was sustained, but not super impressive here this year. We had 4-5 sub freezing highs last December, just one this year.

Also even with the upcoming torch this December may end up cooler than last. It will not be warmer, we had a 62/45 day to kick off the month last year. Though maybe tomorrow tries. I bet we don’t drop below 45 even up here until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Oh yeah I’d definitely take 2021 over 2022. Here atleast both were pretty solid but 2021 was snowier and just one long event as opposed to this one just being 2 separate events and an overall colder month.

Now that the arctic blast is over y’all just forgot about the ICON.

Well now that you bring that up I got kinda curious to see what it was showing and it also shows a decent storm. Wind speeds aren’t that impressive with it though.

This one was decent, I think it was a

lot better in your area, but it wasn’t like we were torching down here all month while you guys scored.

It’s too bad the arctic air couldn’t have dug south a little better with this one, but it’s still hard to complain.

The GFS long range reminds me of those novelty/joke candies that are sweet and tasty until you bite into them and then they have garlic in the middle.

Yeah if that setup gave the western lowlands a good snow event then the I 5 corridor would average a lot more than 5-10” of snow a year.

It was definitely a comparison of the event just based on the IMBY stats for the months. Down there and regionally…2021 was better. 2022 didn’t even get real snowfall down there just sleet/ice and a brief cold wave. I think most people especially south of Everett would’ve gladly taken 2021 over what verified this week. Both were good though.

I would take this year. Last year was a bunch of sad snowfalls that melted by the afternoon. We had 4" of snow that month. This year at least some very cold highs

Looks like 57/37 here today, 37 was at midnight and had warmed to 57 by 7:30 am. Not the Christmas we all hope for but I can’t complain having had 2 cold waves prior to Christmas. Hoping January and February deliver the goods too.

Both events got arctic up here…but 2021 definitely didn’t go arctic south of Olympia really. I did like the legit arctic airmass we got from this one. More snow south of Everett would’ve been nice but atleast it snowed some. Definitely a very memorable storm especially the ice at the end.

Yeah we got kind of snow holed in 2021 which was a bit annoying. Our biggest event was probably on the 13th from random heavy showers with an inch aside from the maybe 1.5" on the 26th

I would take 2021. This round was not especially memorable. No snow, a morning of ice hell and two sub freezing highs. I would have to look back at specifics, but there was definitely at least 6 inches of snow here last year and I think 3-4 days of sub freezing highs. It felt like when I was in Michigan in the winter. Not this year.

Interestingly neither this year or last will be as cold as December 2016 or 2017 down here, but they ended a 3 year torch run… now can we end the 5 year January torch run, though I guess technically last January was about average… it seemed like a torch lol.

I saw diamond dust right here in Eugene in Dec 2013 when the temps were around 0. It was only the 2nd or 3rd time I've ever seen it.

Fun fact: It is currently colder in Hood River(25) than it is in Williams Lake, BC(27).

I'm curious if there is another geographic feature anywhere else in the lower 48 that has the ability to generate crazy, anomalous weather like the Columbia gorge can. I can't think of one.

I almost wanna say the Black Hills in SD where in Rapid City, the Chinook winds can rapidly raise the temps to 50-60F and create a warm bubble surrounded by cold air. That area's been on my bucket list to go hiking sometime.

Still doesn't feel as impressive as the Gorge though.

I have to post these pics.

My mom is misses Christmas and always has been. She has been doing this for years and adds to it every year.

68 years old and she still does all the lights herself, the inside of there little house is a hallmark post card. The pics do it no justice.

The Black Hills are magical!

Alright, I'm confused.  Why the F is it snowing?!?  SE Portland, about 300' ASL.  Not home, but it's snowing according to my cam feed and there's nothing showing up on radar.  Have I mentioned that I'm confused?

@Gradient Keeperyo what’s going on down there?

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Crazy. Upper air temps 925mb, 850mb are too warm to support snow. I am however sitting at 31.4 near west Gresham. NWS AFD says offshore flow will increase tonight into tomorrow morning pulling more cold air out of the Gorge. Hmmmm!
