December 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Very snowy and windy drive out of Baker City down through Ladd Canyon yesterday afternoon. We were thinking crossing the Blues might be pretty bad, but by the time we headed over the heavy snow had moved east. Beyond that there was some heavy rain at times in the Gorge but nothing too noteworthy.

Was 41 degrees when we got home last night but the southerlies kicked in right before midnight and bumped the temp to 47. Currently 46, dry and mild this morning.

This has been quite a year.. Overall I'm sure this is most people's reaction.

And pretty soon it won't be December anymore

It's not accurate.

EUG had their last subfreezing high on 1/14/2017.

They went from December 1998 to January 2004 without one, so they still have a year to go for catching that streak.

I figured the late 90s early 2000s easily gave it a run for its money. No major February 2019 style 33 degree snowstorms in that stretch either!

Has not been too horrific in my back yard, a few good windstorms in early November, a quite wet second half of December, and a little over 3” of snow last week for a nicely white Christmas Eve/Day morning. I can think of many first half winters that have been predominantly split flow hell.

Other than one windstorm mid-November and the Labor Day wind event, not much weather wise was really that great this year. One severe t'storm on August 5th but the rest of my t'storms were pretty much garden variety. The May 30th outbreak went completely around me. If you look at that on a radar loop you'd guess I at least heard thunder but not even that either.

Pretty wild actually the swing from Feb 2019 snow/cold anomaly to one of the record driest Februaries ever only one year later.

Incorrect, I just checked ACIS and Dec 29, 1999 had a 32/23 day. It lasted from 12/29/1999-1/5/2004, so if we get past Jan 21 without one, this streak would be longer.

Wild Bill may be crazy, but not that crazy. Once you get beyond 30 foot seas it really starts to hit the fan. If your boat maintains power like it likely will, you’ll most likely be ok. But any mechanical failure, boat goes sideways in the trough, game over in those conditions. In a quota system fishery such as crabbing it would be negligent to be out there currently.

Interestingly enough the Euro just had one of the worst caves to the GFS in the 10 day that I have ever seen for our area. For the last 2 days the GFS showed the storms for next week moving north and getting drier with each run. The Euro was rock steady with strong storms reaching all the way down to LA and giving my area about 48" of snow. The last two runs of the Euro now show what the GFS had caught on to 2 days ago. So sometimes the GFS does lead the way. Either way it is disappointing as we went from a potentially huge week next week to just a dusting of snow now.

Said earlier that if nothing shows up by New Year’s it would start to get concerning. Now up to NYE with nothing even remotely Arctic in sight. 

If this continues for another three weeks, might be time to pull the forks out.

Ending the year with 34.2" of total precip and 20.1" of snowfall for 2020, both above normal for this location. That even puts this year slightly ahead of last year for snowfall around here. It also featured the coldest day in perhaps a decade with a high/low of 26.7F/21F on Jan 14th. Currently 44F with drizzle.

I already said 2 weeks ago winter is over.

More specifically it started in October and ended in mid-November. And they say La Niñas are typically back-loaded...ha!

To be fair, we haven’t hit the backloaded portion of Niña or winter yet. That’s typically begins Jan-Feb... we don’t really know how entire month of Jan is going to play out.

Could be worse.

Victoria, BC went 718 days without a low below freezing from 12/23/98-12/10/00.
