Jan. 22nd-23rd Winter Storm

Measured 3.5-4" outside. Thought we got more but hey better than what the models were saying earlier this morning. Suck it NAM. Euro wins again. The heaviest part is moving out but I think we can still squeeze an inch out of this thing. Measuring was easier than I thought it'd be because the old snowcover was so rock solid that my ruler couldn't penetrate it no matter how hard I pressed down. Now that we have a fairly good base of around 8", bring on the cold!

Looks like I’ll be in a significant lull here. Gonna take a couple hours for snow to reach back here unless it redevelops quickly. That likely will put my area on the low end of the snow forecast. Areas just northwest and southeast getting hit pretty good.

Yeah I see CR/IC is in a massive shaft right now. How much do you have?

Looks like one more good band is going to move through before it's basically over. Nothing earth shattering, but a nice storm since there was a solid chance this morning we'd get nothing and it never looked good for us except for last night.

I picked up a fluffy 0.6" of snow from the first band a couple hours ago.  We are now waiting for the south-central Iowa snow to move up here.

Terry Swails lowered the snow forecast to 3-6", which makes sense given the system's lack of vigor.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

Average snowfall: ~30"

This was especially good because the snowpack in the Northern parts of the city were on life support. One mild sunny day and there'd be exposed grass and bare spots. I probably woulda been fine down here, but nice to have a security blanket. In addition, the wind-driven nature of this helped to cover up tree-shadowed spots from the last storm.

Cold front blew in HARD. Just like the good old days!

Rain missed DFW and went SE.

Currently 47* tonight's low will hit 32*

Winds are 16mph gusting to 30mph. They'll die down before dawn.

There's some snow/ice on the radar right now in southern Oklahoma but I don't it will amount to anything.

But there's hope Oklahoma!!

Finally, a Blue Norther. :)

So the Des Moines area has a couple inches, Dubuque and QC have an inch, and Rockford has 2.  Here we are in Cedar Rapids waiting.

One positive... the last couple HRRR runs have re-added a strip of up to 0.50" precip through the Cedar Rapids area tonight.

Very nice snowfall coming down...picked up 0.2" in the last 15 min or so...hears to hoping the changeover doesn't happen till very late or lack thereof.  Latest HRRR is suggest the rain/snow line makes it up to ORD overnight for a time but still lays down 2-3" which I would gladly take.

Interestingly, driving around town, you can clearly notice a glaze of ice on top of the snow pack which made it look like an ice rink.  I've only seen that a couple times in my life and remember a time when that happened back when I was a kid.  It brought back some memories which was kinda neat.  Good thing is, temps aren't supposed to climb that high which will allow the snow pack to hold up pretty well.  This stuff will be concrete once the cold does arrive.

Looks like from my house to the north should stay mostly snow now. Big change from a few hours ago.

Hope you get nailed. What radar had shown as SNOW earlier was just ZR and a few IP, so nothing happening down here unless you like ice skating, or falling on your a$$ in parking lots
