Coming thru North Bend and it’s lightly ice pelleting. Could be sleet, doesn’t look like snow or graupel

We drove up to Bellingham earlier this afternoon so no confirmation available from me.

NB station is at 45 right now... but dewpoint is still at 28 so could be ice pellets.   Doesn't look like it's doing anything at my house per the front door cam.

Was still a dusting of snow up in Mt Vernon this morning where I was doing some dog training stuff. Usually that area is the first to melt out if they get anything at all.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Yeah... would not be a fan of some of those summers in the 80s and 90s.

Except for one week in June... last summer averaged close to normal and was very pleasant.    There was one week of pure hell of course.

I have a feeling the stats for actual winter Dec 21 through March 22 will be quite a bit colder (anomaly wise) than meteorological winter.  March is looking pretty chilly right now and a huge strat warming event in currently underway.  It wouldn't surprise me in the least to have another round of much below normal temps with some snow coming up.

Unlike the other false alarms, this is a legitimate stratwarm (possibly a SSW) that will have significant structural effects on the PV and the NH circulation in general.

No sign of spring on the 00z EPS.

Significant MJO transiting the Pacific in tandem with the coming stratwarm/W2 often forebodes significant (and sustained) cold across much of the CONUS, at this point in the seasonal cycle.

So is spring defined as the time when the entire country has warmer than normal 850mb temps?   ;)

Meteorological spring can be defined by the seasonal moderation of temperatures. Significantly colder than average temperatures in March/April would constitute delay in that cycle of moderation, even if said temperatures would be warmer than average by January/February standards.

We will see how March unfolds…but right now in terms of winter weather in the lowlands I wouldn’t expect much. With meteorological spring starting in 36 hours…definitely can start looking back on this winter and grading it.
Late December-Early January was one of the best stretches of winter weather in the 21st century here. 12/20-1/5 was a pretty nice string of cold wintery weather. Measurable snowfall on 8 different days. 10 sub 40 highs and 4 consecutive sub freezing highs…the 24/16 temp spread on 12/27 was the coldest day I’ve ever recorded at my location. 11” of snowfall as well.
Late February blast was definitely a nice addition to the winter. Not quite the same level of some late winter blasts like 2011 or 2018 but pretty respectable on its own. 2 sub 40 high temps with a record low of 21 degrees on 2/23. Even a surprise 0.3” of snow on 2/24. There wasn’t widespread lowland snow but many people did get some.
Overall I’d give this winter an A. All 3 months finished below normal in temps. Mid January through mid February was incredibly boring but the 2 separate cold snaps were impressive.

Meanwhile it’s 49 with moderate rain here. 0.15” today and 0.95” this month. The stats for this month won’t reflect just how dry it was with getting a big rainstorm on the final day. Hopefully this spring can bring some dynamic interesting weather and lots of mountain snows.
