Yeah I’m lucky to have a lot of shade on my property so the almost spring powered sun did not do a lot to melt there, however at work where it’s more wide open, all of the snow is gone from the full sun areas, still lots in the shade however.

I always wondered how you kept snow so well!

Maybe. I think at least a good portion of it will.

Looks like a sixth below average March in a row may be in the cards. Pretty interesting how Feb and March cooled in the 1991-20 averages compared to 1981-10, while every other month warmed. Have to wonder whether it’s just weird luck or if our climo is trending towards later winters.

It’s Feb 24. Looks like Corvallis put up a 42/25 today after a 39/20 yesterday pretty nice late season airmass did you get any snow this morning

Summer ☀️ grows while Winter ❄️  goes

Do you think the West Coast will have a more active storm track as we go into March and April, or is this anomalously dry pattern going to continue for the remainder of the rainy season? It has been incredibly dry in much of California for nearly two months now and has been rather dry even further north as well!

Yeah I just got home and like always it’s a different world here just 1 mile from my work. Both front and back yard. Just a small portion of the north facing yard had a lot of melt but otherwise still snow on the trees even!

We still have snow on the sides of trees facing away from the sun too.    Basically unchanged since the snow event on Monday in places that shaded.

Ya know with the lack of hype in the models and the media and ourselves I really thought this week was just going to be a little chilly at night and perhaps a little sloppy snow at some point so it helped make this week even more special with all of the “surprise” snow and cold!

Agree….it was kind of nice to sit back and just enjoy it as it happened rather then obsess over each model run hoping to be in the sweet spot or watching  it trend east and suffer and anxiety attack.

41/28 and currently 34*

Still snow on the ground here as well

My guess is positive precip departures are more likely in SoCal/SW US than the PNW next month. Sort of a reversal from January.

I would really hope so. Ground here remained sufficiently wet even after the 50 day dry stretch. Inversions, fog, cooler weather prevented much evaporation... It would be fine if we were dry and CA ended up wet, particularly with this upcoming rain here.

This is a pretty cool tool the NYT just announced on snowfall amounts. Cites NWS forecast data.

Still here but just lurking.  I was shut out totally on the first round when Lake Goodwin got up to 10”.  Got 1” last night thru this morning.  I think my total this winter is around 13” so you have eaten my lunch.  I hope you liked the peanut butter and liverworst.  Currently 26F.

Just to drill home how irrelevant “warm ground temperatures” are for snow/ice accumulation.

It was 75 degrees here Wednesday afternoon with full sunshine. Just 12 hours later we were already seeing ZR accretion on *pavement* with an ambient temperature in the low 30s. And ZR releases latent heat, which often keeps BL temps warmer than they would otherwise be.

Precip itself cools the ground very quickly. Water has a very high thermal capacity…put cold water on anything hot and it’ll cool that hot object quickly. What actually matters (especially for snowfall) is the *rate* at which it falls. It is by far the most important variable for accumulations. Don’t factor anything else into the equation until you’ve factored in rates.
