August 2022 PNW Observations and Discussion - 1956 Redux!1!!1!

I hope something like that happens again, apparently totals ranged from 12" (downtown) to over 24" (South Metro, West Metro, Clark County and far east Metro I think)! Not sure about exact totals but I got them from old NWS PNS statements

I was living in Portland (up against the West Hills near Macleay Park) in 2008 and that is about right. Christmas Day began with wet, gloppy snow (atop significant accumulations from two previous events) and ended with cold rain. There was 13" on the ground at my place and about 18" in the St. Johns neighborhood.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Down to 66 here. Longer nights have definitely been taking the edge off these warm days now.

Longer nights are also producing some good dews in the morning..... you can definitely feel a hint of fall in the air early on.

Yeah a few days ago it really looked like it was just gonna be consistently warmer and drier than normal the next few weeks. I figured that would be wrong.

Here's the month in Hillsboro! They had less subfreezing highs in a row (15) but more snow than Downtown, and they dropped to -14! I also think the old Hillsboro COOP station was a worse radiational cooling spot than the current airport but I might be wrong about that:

Jan 1930 was way more impressive in NW OR than in the Puget Sound area.  Up here there wasn't that much snow to aid in creating the insane min temps that were experienced down your way.  It was still very cold here, but only a little bit of snow.  The winter before was amazing up here though.

It makes a huge difference for sure.  Our house is much cooler tonight than an 85 degree day would have produced a month ago.  Much less sun beating down on the house in the afternoon.

Incredibly Jan 1929, 1930, and 1937 were all much colder than any January we have seen since at least 1980.  We used to get one or two really cold ones each decade.

To be honest there is kind of a reason I flee to the mountains all the time during the winter.

Driving from the Portland metro to Mt Hood is a trip. Get in your car in 50 degree drizzle and you're in winter wonderland an hour later. Few places have this privilege.

Where I grew up in SoCal you could be in the snow in about 30 minutes. Just don't try to go to Big Bear, it'll be over an hour due to traffic and the idiots who didn't bring the required chains.

Won’t be long until 36°F foggy nights at Reser and Autzen stadiums!

My buddies actually left one of the later games in the season halfway through last year. Just got too cold to keep standing outside. Was a fun night though, sang for a bunch of people and smoked a joint under the Weatherford arch, lol. 🤫 Think the low ended up around 26.

We went to the Oregon vs Washington State game in late October 2019. Ended up being a great game, but got very cold towards the end. My wife’s friend from Australia was visiting and her and her bf got too cold and left before the end. Two other really cold Ducks games I remember were Oregon vs USC in November 2015, which was actually a day game, but was very cold on the shaded end of the stadium after a morning low of 19 at EUG, and the 2014  game in Corvallis which was also in late November.

I was not personally there, but the 2009 Oregon vs Oregon state game in Eugene was in early December on a very cold night.

My coldest Black Friday was in 2019. The storm may have been localized but I think the bomb low in late November was an underrated storm. That produced my 2nd biggest November snowfall event next to 2010.

A waste though considering Nov 2019 was warmer than average. December continued to be even warmer. But I did have a White Christmas in 2019 and 2018.

The first snowfalls of a season rarely (if ever) start out with blizzard conditions and icy roads. It started exactly that way in 2019. Can't tell you how many garden variety storms we get before about middle of December in
K-Falls.

Fun fact, Flagstaff has never seen a 100 degree day before!

Another fun fact, I never knew Flagstaff had an issue with flash flooding. Though I wonder if its little pockets of that area. They are quite elevated.

That was a good one. Produced minor accumulation in the rogue valley too. central Oregon was hit hard too. We had about 1/2” with the wrap around moisture, but the main focus was further south. November 2019 was chilly and very dry here.

I had a storm total of 6" 11/26-27. Through Dec 1st, 11" fell.

That was the most I'd started December with since 2010, the week I moved to Klamath.

2010 was so much bigger though; odd that in the month of November I haven't seen anything
between 6.5" and 20"+. Through Dec 3rd in 2010, 26" fell.

The winter of 2000-01 featured lots of breaks in the rain here... there was actually no real long stretches of persistent rain all the way through spring that year.  Unlike last year when it rained almost every day from October - December.  There was a 2-week stretch through the middle of November 2000 with no measurable precip which is extremely rare in my area.    After that it was pretty evenly split between rainy days and dry days through April... also somewhat unusual.

Although some of our more advanced members will probably already know a lot of what is discussed, for our less experienced members, this article gives a pretty good rundown of the various factors that influence the winter weather patterns. It also gives some thoughts on the upcoming winter.

Nice write-up there.

Only qualm I have is 1999/00 and 2000/01 were left out of the analog pool. Crazy to exclude those in favor of weak sauce niña winters like 2005/06 and 2016/17.

Another fun fact, I never knew Flagstaff had an issue with flash flooding. Though I wonder if its little pockets of that area. They are quite elevated.

As I understand it, there are usually burn scars involved. Rainfall is high enough there that there is normally enough vegetation to slow runoff down.

Yes, that was one of the driest winters on record and a terrible snowpack year with drought problems that spring. It was somewhat similar to 2004-05 with a lot of rex blocks along the West Coast with splitting storms. SoCal had a very wet winter. Acted more like an El Nino.

A repeat would nice for the West... balance things out.

Not really. Just would be flipping drought locations. I think a 1955-56 repeat would be a lot nicer for the West. Plenty of rain and snow in CA that year.

Given that this summer has been a 1955 repeat... we should be all set!

SW needs the precip way more than the PNW.
