I went down to North Bend and the wind down there is pretty crazy... compared to the relatively calm conditions up here.   Lots of blowing snow and the roads are a shiny sheet of compacted snow that has turned to ice from the wind and traffic.   There are places where you can't go more than 5 mph on a road that is completely flat or you will start sliding.

It's now been at or below 20 degrees here for the past 91 hours. That's by far the longest stretch I've ever experienced. Also, while BLI didn't get below 10 degrees during this event, the downtown station got down to 9 last night, which is right by where I live anyway. I went for a walk at 1 AM to experience single digits for the first time, and no surprise, but it was cold! Looks like we may get a quarter-inch of ice here with a bit of snow. I'm also remembering how much models rushed the warm-up in January 2012, when Seattle got a whole extra day of ice and snow, and I think that's a possibility again this time.

Edit--just saw that the downtown station got all the way down to 7 this morning. Wow!

PDX folks-- thoughts on ice accumulation? I'm surprised some models are relatively light despite most of the .2-.5 in of precip they show likely falling as ice-- any reason for this?

Looks like the low level cold has made it to about Roseburg. I see they are sitting at 35 with a north wind.

The problem in North Bend is that the city refuses to use any road treatment.   And they will plow but don't scrape to the bottom either.    They have their reasons but no one likes it.    Right next door the city of Snoqualmie does both and their roads are perfectly clear.    When there is snow, people around here always joke that when you go past the 'Entering Snoqualmie' sign on Hwy 202 its like crossing into another country.    In marginal situations its not a big deal because it usually melts off the roads down there in one day.   But in this situation the snow that was left on the roads has now compacted into a real sheet of ice.

Our area is technically outside of the city limits and maintained by King County and that is such a blessing.    We also have to deal with hills so leaving the road snow covered is not an option.

Vasectomy complete. Let the snow/sleet/ice storm begin! 23/5 with very gusty winds on the east shore of Lake Tapps.

Watch out for kids climbing on your lap. My daughter used to climb on my lap before bed for stories and every dam time would knock my boys and post snip was just the cherry on top.

Hot Hands (hand warmer) inside a fabric pouch sealed with velcro stuck to the bottom of the feeder with double sided tape works great. Got mine from a place in Olympia years ago.

I tried using a different brand of hand warmers but only had marginal success.  I'll look for the "Hot Hands" variety and try them.  The light bulb method works great but it's a pain to set up.  Thanks, and welcome to the forum.

Yep. Recovery was a piece of cake for me. I was actually surprised by how easy the whole process was. But I was certainly more.....aware....of that area for about a week after.

Bozeman is the same but the dry powdery snow does make a difference. I don't think I've seen any sustained bare pavement here since early November this year. They do not treat the roads, some sand in the intersections and that's it.

This is 19th ave in Bozeman and it is by far the busiest road through Bozeman. Eventually you just get used to it all winter. Snow tires really do make a massive difference whether or not you have AWD.

This map is not correct then.

I've been wondering about those mesoscale analysis maps. I think they are mainly based on model output, not observations.

It sounds like they are basically just RAP model output (https://www.spc.noaa.gov/exper/mesoanalysis/).

Yes... snow tires are a must there for sure.

But we only have a couple days a year that are like this in the valley out here and in Issaquah and Bellevue where we usually drive so it seems like overkill.

Thanks. Happy to be here. Lived in Vancouver, BC, Seattle and now many years just outside PDX.

My latest batch of name brand Hot Hands are not a match for the wind. Just checked and the feeder is 75% ice. Put the feeder with a new HH out at 7am. Made it to about 12:45. My other feeder is over a bird bath heater in a covered aluminum pie tin about .25- .5 inch below the actual feeder. Struggling with the wind too.
