Part I - January 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Ok so this evening just got a bit worse for me, my dr. called and informed me of the results of my CT scan and it is cancer, according to my dr. it is treatable and won't involve any really invasive treatment/s.

Needless to say I am taking it as best as possible atm, but hearing those words really changes your psyche in a way I never thought it would for me. My interactions and posts will be limited going forward.

Here's hoping it dumps two feet of snow from Nanaimo to Eugene.

See you weirdo's soon.

Went through something similar last year about now. Very interesting how your brain processes things and it tells me that getting a truly horrifying diagnosis is not something I would choose to go through.

Surgery got it, along with a couple small radiation implants. Lucky. Good thoughts coming your way from the soon to be Arctic Tundra of Clark County!

I'm very sorry and saddened to hear this. I am sure we all more than understand if your presence here is more absent than usual and why that is. You take care of yourself right now. Stay strong. Kick this cancers butt! You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey I know this isn't not much to go off but what is the site that you can view euro and gfs and shows the line graph with temps, snow depth, rain prep...ik it's not tropical tidbits or weatherbell and it has a lot of ads. Thanks for the help!

47/41 here today. Currently 41 with light rain. Interesting to see how far into the month we make it without a freeze. Average low goes up to 30 on Thursday. NWS has a 1500' snow level tomorrow night, but forecasting a low in the mid-30s, so it would not stick.

Mark Nelsen not drinking the Kool Aid yet.  He said cold air could circulate out over the ocean and bring low level snow to us Tues OR the cold air stays bottled up in N. Wa.  He has 38/32 with a mix for Tues.  Won't commit yet.

Really good he's even highlighting the possibility! :D

And of course, the major possible offshore event and snow next week comes right after, so we'll see...

I mean, 1/10/17 was followed by some pretty Arctic temps.

Was with a relatively borderline low level airmass though. Temps largely between 30 and 32 degrees during the snow. You do have to go back to February 2014 to find a snowfall here that was synched up with a deeper airmass and temps below the upper 20s.

18z GFS showed some real impressive cold air at the surface, unusually sharp front for here. Temps in PDX on Monday drop from 39F at 10 AM to 25-26F by 1 PM. I'm not really going to take the surface temps too literally right now but still unusual to see that happening while the 850s are only dropping from -2c to -4c at that time, lot of low level cold coming with this.

Very sorry to hear Jbolin. I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through but I just wanted you to know that I'm sending you all the healing vibes to fight this crap off! You got this!!

That cold pool that is going to be in southern BC is a big wildcard with this.  Really adds some potential punch.

The first week of January 2017 is pretty underrated IMO. I think a similar solution would be a little more than I am expecting from the upcoming pattern. One of the limiting factors with that event was a total lack of cold air on this side of the pole.

You haven't noticed the extreme cold that is being modeled for southern BC as this event unfolds?

Would be incredible to get a real arctic front with a sharp temp gradient. Maybe have PDX be 28 at noon Monday while it is mid-40s at SLE. Then see 10-15 degree hourly temp drops down the valley with the front.... Happened a few times every winter in Oklahoma (Sometimes up to 20-30 degree temp drops in an hour or two.), and it never got old.
