January 2024 Weather in the PNW (Part II)

Popped to 10° briefly this afternoon to bust an all-day single-digit attempt. Looks like we bottomed out at 3° and a -20° windchill at 9am, right when I was bringing my daughter to school and heading to work.

My son claims his freshly-showered hair was starting to freeze when he ran out to start his brother's car at 7am....

Not sure if this was discussed... but this really does attempt to offset June 2021.    The peak of that heat wave was a +24.6 at SEA and today was -22.     We will see how it shakes out the next 2 days but it will be in the ballpark.  

That is not a statement about my opinion or preferences... just numbers.   I loved today and was outside quite a bit.   I hated the June 2021 heat wave with every fiber of my being.   Those are also just facts.   Nature loves to throw extreme weather at us so we roll with the punches.  But if I had to pick... this extreme weather is about 10,000 times more enjoyable than the extreme weather in June 2021.

I don't think daily departures tell the whole story. While this cold wave has been really impressive, we've seen multiple similar and some even crazier. June 2021 was basically unprecedented

We had a funeral for my godfather today and had to be outside at times for long periods. Even with the bone chilling cold, it was more bearable than that heatwave.

Had a daytime high of -20F here today. Already down to -33F and clouds are finally clearing.

Sure would appear that we'll break Dec 2022 records at this point. I'm still in awe at how cold this airmass became in the end!

I would point out that while our winters have been more dynamic than RECENT history since 2016, our winters HAVE NOT trended colder on the aggregate.
