Phil also jumped on me when I suggested the possibility one week prior.    But there it is... 100 degrees on that day.   😀

And PDX did hit 100 degrees on two consecutive weekends.

DC’s forecast certainly doesn’t look like the Dubai-like hole Phil sometimes makes it out to be!

There's only specific people that have had oppressively hot summer weather, Texas has been baking non stop in the 100's while I'm pretty sure this will be an average summer in eastern KY. Since June there hasn't been a "heatwave" at my place.

We were probably just lucky this year. August could have the smallest departure from normal out of the 3 summer months.

Funny thing is PDX/EUG will still finish way colder than DCA in both July and August despite the ridge west/trough east pattern that has dominated this summer.

Today ended up being really pleasant.  I thought it would be muggier, but the dp is very reasonable today.

Very true.

No doubt the amount of heat here this summer has been quite a surprise though given the persistent Nina.

Actually looks extremely dry by August standards. At least for a few days.

Dews in the upper 50s/low 60s would be as low as I’ve ever seen in mid-August. I knew something like this would happen if I traveled away. 🙄

When it's below 80, you almost can't really notice the muggy air, well maybe once you get used to the area.

Most of the Spring season was really nice and I can finally say we have all 4 seasons out here. I can't wait to see what Fall is like.

I’ve noticed your area cools off much better at night. Being surrounded by water really hurts us during the 2nd half of summer and autumn.

The lows do take a toll. Even though it hasn't been hotter than 93, about the warmest nights Portland can remember are like two-thirds of our summer nights. Seems like I can drop into the 60's more often than you, but still warm compared to the nights Klamath Falls had regularly.

From winter to summer, can we admit La Nina hasn't been acting right? Let's start with the obvious north trend on snowfall since 2020. Then the summers being worse than a Blob summer.

The traditional La Ninas never left southern Oregon so dry in mid-late winter.

Portland's been barely able to pull off sub 80 days this summer (after mid-late June) too. Crazy to think that in years like August 1968 PDX saw highs in the low 60s and 50s. Some interesting readings that month from the Bethany COOP station:

8/9: 92/50
8/12: 84/41
8/21: 72/40
8/24: 58/53
8/25: 59/52

And 2020/2021 was the warmest La Nina winter on record at PDX I think.

Last year was second hottest on record just behind 1988. Its been an exceptionally hot last two summers here.🥵

Yup, the area I left is having its second really hot summer in a row. While many talked about Portland's 116, the following July after that was a month long heatwave in Klamath Falls. First half of August was even hot but somehow the 2nd half took the oomph off the departure.

Wow, you dropped to -20 in 2013/2014? Was that in December?  That was our last regionwide arctic blast, but Jan 2017 got colder in Portland at least. From your signature 2013/2014 doesn't looks that snowy though, some places around Corvallis I think had like 6" in December and then 18" in February, while you had only 9" total in a snowier climate, which is about what I got.

12/8/2013, hit -20. I understand there was also a February arctic blast but that one didn't quite reach me. It went down to about Deschutes County and I had highs over 40 during that.

That winter was dry yes, after it snowed once, it wouldn't snow for days after. I'm pretty sure December 6th was the only day I had snow before the 3 weeks of cold inversion that followed.

Gonna have to detox big time when I get home. Been drinking way too much this summer, my tolerance is through the roof again.

It's money well spent though. The pictures and reviews of the place look excellent. Enjoy your life while you're still young dude and live it up!!! 🥳

Looks like 850mb temps at Salem only bottomed out around -8c with the February one, Portland did have a 23/19 day though. That was fun, the east winds were very strong with that here.

WILDFIRE UPDATE

(Lightning has caused havoc in every region of the PNW)

NEW Known Wildfires started today! 8/11/22

Washington - 25 (Lightning has sparked dozens of wildfires in the state. Earlier in the summer fire crews were on top of everything, but as more fires spark, the harder it becomes. 25 new fires in the past 24hrs and 38 in the past 48hrs. A new blaze is quickly spreading near the town of Grandview and could be a risk if not contained. Lightning caused several fires to spark northeast of Kachess Lake in a remote, rugged area.  Lightning also sparked several new fires northwest of Lake Wenatchee.  WA Fire Crews are optimistic about fully putting out the Cow Canyon Fire and Vantage Highway Fire by the end of the week. The cluster of fires, high up in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest we reported yesterday are growing at an unfortunate rate and could become a large wildfire.  Speaking of large wild fires, the state in just the past few days went from having only 3 large fires to now having six.  The new large wildfires are the Mohr Fire north of East Wenatchee and the Canyon Road Fire near Grandview.  A new cluster of lightning induced fires also sparked around the large Williams Lake Fire making things worse for firefighters. The total increases from 32 to 54, the most fires at one time in Washington so far this year.) Total: 54

Oregon - 14 (14 new fires across the state.  There have been 38 new fires in the past 48hrs.  Thankfully dozens of fires have been put out in the past 24hrs and great progress has occurred in the large fires south of the Oregon border in Northern California. There are three large fires in the state; the Miller Road Fire, Cedar Creek Fire, and Windigo Fire. The lightning strike are unfortunately hitting the driest parts of the state and in areas where wildfires are already burning, simply increasing the amount of fire. The total of fires in the state has seen a big drop from a record high (this year) of 78 to 60.) Total: 60

Idaho - 4 (Four new fires in the past 24hrs, and pretty spread out around the state.  Some good news as the large, fast burning Michaud Creek Fire near Pocatello was put out in the past 24hrs.  This brings the large fires in the state down from five to four. The total number fires grows from 5 to 9.) Total: 9

British Columbia - 43 (BC Fire Mapping has been pretty off-pace this year, hence the huge discrepancies at times.  Nonetheless, there was an astonishing 43 new fires in the province.  Most appear to be lightning caused. There are now six large wildfires in BC, one less than yesterday. The total amount of fires in the province increases from 58 to 84, the highest so far this year.) Total: 84

Who Has had The Most Amount of Fires (Ranked by days in which they've had the most fires, only counting days we've kept track here.)

1. British Columbia - 17 days with the most wildfires

2. Oregon - 2 days with the most wildfires.

SMOKE UPDATE

Onshore winds are pushing smoke eastward and have really helped clear out most of the region.  All areas are seeing good quality and good visibility except for some valleys in the British Columbia interior, and the continued moderate to unhealthy air in Grants Pass, Medford, and Klamath Falls, all due to California wildfire smoke. Models show smoke may flow aloft, northward from California a little on Friday, but it should cause no issue.  By Saturday, most of the smoke will be well east of Washington, Oregon, lower mainland BC and making it's way east over Idaho and Montana.  Medford might get some relief by Sunday if winds do indeed shift south and blow smoke towards California's Inland Empire.
