PNW December 2022, winter might be coming; but mostly canceled.

Yeah that must be frustrating to deal with. What causes that warm gap to happen there?

We do generally okay up here in most situations. 2016/2017 we did great with 18" of snow but had less than PDX the next few winters.

I know the area well, born and raised in the valley, lived in many places in the area.  Washington county sucks for the most part for snow, Clackamas a close second just south of Foster or so on 205 it usually turns to crap, unless you are on Mt. Scott.

Just proves the point.  Got warm nosed/tongued into freezing rain when most of the area it was snowing, lol.

He said they got 2.5" of snow that was ruined by freezing rain within a day. Eugene got 6" of snow. He wasn't impressed.

Near the river, very low elevation.  Nice gap between Pete's Mountain and Rosemont that funnels in the south wind is my best guess.

It happened A lot!!!!  I know personally.  That is the crappiest place to be outside of Canby, Aurora, Molalla, etc...

Brownsville up to Lebanon doesn't do too great either.

Love the Mist as well, really good stories. I'm into creative horror writing (if I'm not on writer's block lol) and I've been trying to find ways to incorporate weather into horror stories, maybe I'll even post some in the Off-Topic thread. I'm bored so I might as well share.

One idea is that after getting snubbed by the models so much all winter, a fellow weenie prays hard for snow one night and then the next day, his place is a winter wonderland with 3' of snow. He's all confused but excited and happy, until he sees the snow outside the window start to move around. Turns out, the snow isn't the only things that fell from the skies overnight.

Another is more pysch horror, but it deals with hours of Euro/GFS model riding to where someone starts distinct shapes like hieroglyphics and runic symbols on the maps and it leads to more cryptic brutal imagery.

Um, PLEASE share these! I write/edit for a living and I'm always looking for creative short stories to read, especially good horror. Weather horror is a brilliant subgenre I don't think I've seen enough of!

Just dropped my wife off at a work dinner she had to attend in downtown Seattle.   Awful drive from Issaquah westward with heavy rain and poor visibility and bad traffic.   Much heavier rain than anything we have seen out here in the last 10 days.  Temp went up from 39 to 46 pretty much uniformly during the drive.

Not trolling here... but I did a little mental escapism driving over Lake Washington with rain pounding on the windshield in the dark at 4:20 pm... pictured a sunny summer day on the water and the lake full of boats and seemingly endless daylight.  Brightened my mood.   But I also don't want what is left of my snow to melt and want more!    I am weenie for summer and holiday snow.

I can relate to this. I want a long summer in Tahoe (rare) but also want a bomber snow season.

Nice!! Love the idea and you should roll with it.

In my story I'm writing, one of the protagonists can manipulate Earth's plate tectonics and erupts a supervolcano with just the right amount of tephra to return the atmosphere to 19th century conditions.

I almost died at Olallie Lake with Erik in august 2016. I was hammered at like 1am and fell straight back and hit my head on a log. My wife said she could hear it clearly a hundred yards away from our campsite.

I hope that didn't have any long-term effects. I've hit the left side of my head twice. Falling out of a 2-story window when I was 2 and then falling over and hitting it while having an epileptic episode when I was 11.

Been a tough road but I've had a lot of help from people like y'all. Thank you for being good friends.

I have had tons of concussions in my life and never noticed any long lasting effects outside of a couple of weeks. I have now had covid 3 times and wow my memory is garbage. Super noticeable and kind of alarming. That why did I walk into this room feeling? is happening enough to where I am concerned. I am 44 for reference.

I just read this, pretty interesting. Just recently scientists genetically mapped 2 million year old DNA, the worlds oldest ever to be identified and it revealed a different Greenland than we originally thought.

‘Not much lives in the northernmost tip of Greenland today. Some lichens and moss survive in the polar desert, but “almost nothing there of any life, of any significance,” said evolutionary geneticist Eske Willerslev. Yet millions of years ago, a much warmer climate supported an ecosystem that was teeming with a wide diversity of life — and Willerslev has the DNA to prove it.

In a study published Wednesday in Nature, Willerslev and his colleagues genetically mapped 2-million-year-old DNA from Arctic sediments — now the world’s oldest DNA to be identified. They discovered evidence of more than 100 plant genera, nine animal taxa including the extinct elephant-like mastodon, and even marine life within the same region.’

‘Soon, a picture of the ancient forests, bays, flora and fauna came into focus. Yet the results were also puzzling — many of the uncovered animals and plants didn’t seem to make ecological sense. Plants and animals that are typically found in the Arctic were in the same ecosystem as those found in boreal forests further south. One abundant plant genus was dryas, which is typically found in the Arctic. Yet the team also found poplars, deciduous trees usually found in boreal forests.

Perhaps the most surprising discovery was the mastodon, a hairy relative of the elephant that has long been associated with boreal forests in North America. Willerslev said no one had speculated the mammal would travel so far north, but maybe it traveled across the ice with the reindeer.‘

I'm sure we all have some long term issues just from being kids.  Probably helped frame our personalities and now, later in life, some aches and pains.

I’m not sure what to think about the long range potential. The potential is real but it’s still a ways out. Would really be nice to see something before the end of the month to really solidify this month as a great one. We had a really good run of winter Weather already so I’m not too worried about if the stuff in the longer range works out though. Im sure we will get a nice event at some point later this winter maybe even a couple events.

I think this one is going to work out.  Still not sure enough to tell my wife to sound the alarm though.  That's kind of the gold standard for me.

Looks like some decent potential for wheelbarrow ice here in Eugene. For anyone unfamiliar, you negligently leave a wheelbarrow in the yard and allow it to fill with rainwater. When some chilly weather arrives, you magically get ice.

Way too much model flux and time out in the future for me to be excited about…but it’s always nice seeing it’s possible in the long range. Last week was really fun although it wasn’t a truly solid event like we’ve had several of in recent years. We did pull off a 34/25 day on 12/1 and several decent snow events with snow on the ground for a week. However I’d like to get a decent arctic outbreak with some sub freezing highs and some snow or a big snowstorm out of the next opportunity.

Looks like some decent potential for wheelbarrow ice here in Eugene. For anyone unfamiliar, you negligently leave a wheelbarrow in the yard and allow it to fill with rainwater. When some chilly weather arrives, you magically get ice.

I currently have a wheel barrow full of fresh cut rounds and rain water. Could get fun.
